Purdey knife to save the rhino

I've just come across, via serendipity, a raffle being sponsored by the stalking St Huberts Club of GB. They are raffling a Purdey stalking knife as a fund raiser for Save the Rhino campaign. Being marked as Purdey, it is frightfully expensive and no doubt many other knives quite as good, but for a £20 ticket - and a good cause - I'd be daft not to buy a ticket and take a chance. The total number of tickets on offer is not great, so my odds are better than the National Lottery.

As a Good Cause, as well as personal interest, I'd encourage others to have a go for this.

Good luck

A worthy cause indeed but the knife leaves a lot to be desired in terms of both design and aesthetics IMHO.

Further, the price of the knife - should one wish to aquire such after the raffle - is also way off the mark even allowing for the "Purdey" stamp!

One of our members on a trip to South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal was able to get first-hand experience of their work, removing the horns to reduce the likelihood of poaching.

A very worthy cause indeed, but the prize ? A far far better designed tool of equal if not better steel could be had for about a thousand quid less from a good UK maker.

When I was full-time in the knife making business I saw a number of supposed "Purdey" knives, predominantly in "damascus" , that came from somewhere a hell of a lot closer to Islamabad than Purdeys. I'm not saying the prize knife is hooky ... but buyer beware, a hell of a lot of them are. Look at Purdeys website and search 'knife' to see what they're selling. I'll wager you can get better tools from UK makers on this forum than from Mr J. Pudey and Co. and for a damned sight less of your hard-earned.

In the same vein, you can buy a Blaser F3 instead of a Purdey shotgun. A friend has a Rigby, it's not any more accurate or shoots them any more dead than my Mannlicher. Some people buy a Range Rover whilst others favor a Dacia Bigster. My wife likes Miele appliances, my neighbour's Hotpoint works just as well and has lasted longer.....

Anyway, it's not a discussion on pros and cons; it's a draw and your £20 goes to support Save The Rhino.

Regardless of the appearance, the raffle is a good cause, which is why I bought my £20 ticket. No doubt I could get a possibly better knife (I very much doubt that Purdy have it made in Islamabad!) for V much less than Purdy would sell it to me in a high end Mayfair shop - but I'm not buying a V expensive knife, I'm buying a £20 knife.

Happy to spend £20 for such a worthwhile cause and not be picky on aesthetics or quality of steel, about which I know V little.

I'm not a member of the St Huberts club, but more power to their elbow.
