Quick release mounts and night vision

Hi all,

after enjoying a few trips on the boar using nv I've decided to take it up a notch and kit myself out properly instead of borrowing the gear. I currently have a tikka t3 in .270 with a swaro z6i which is my "go to" gun nowadays for pretty much anything. I am keen to use this on the boar as well but would rather not use a digital add on as Ive heard that decent quality glass isn't as effective with add ons combined with the fact the eyepiece seems to be so close to the bolt/bolt knob I am convinced it would foul anyway. So I'm thinking of putting a picatinny on the tikka and getting some quick release mounts, which will retain zero so I could swap at my leisure.

I am not certain on which night vision scope I'm getting yet but I am tempted with the Yukon photon 6.5. Opinions?

Is anyone else running a similar setup and could recommend some mounts that will hold zero and would be effective for each?

Cheers!

Matt

Matt,

If you're shooting from a high seat/stand, it's generally 40-60m to the feed station, and I would suggest the 4.6 Yukon, which has a much better field of view. I have used the Yukon mount, which also offsets the site backwards, giving better eye relief, and it only costs about £55.00. We did some testing, and found that refitting, pushing the site firmly forward on the rail, and tightening the rear first, followed by the front, pretty much returned to zero. We did use a small torque wrench to get consistent tightening.

For a normal day scope, the Leupold QD mounts are very good for circa £80.00 the pair.

I have a Tikka T3 with a steel picatinny rail and use Leupold QRW mounts for both a day scope and Yukon Photon. Holds zero well enough to shoot a 6" plate at 300 yards with the day scope and shoot foxes with the Yukon beyond 150yards.

I have QD on my scope & photon on 2 rifles, I find that its easy to get back to zero with 1 or 2 shots max..
And it's never far out, so works well.
just as a point to add, I have a brand new 4.6xt that I was looking to sell , if your interested PM me & we can chat

cheers

thanks for the advice everyone. The leupold ones seem popular and modestly priced.

my plan really was to sit in the tower waiting for a deer, then when its too dark to see, throw the nv on to wait for the pigs, then swap back to the day scope in the morning for a deer again. would it hold zero sufficiently for you to remain confident in your kit? or do you think id be best raising my scope slightly so I can fit a digital add on and going that route?

I don't check zero between changes anymore as it was never enough to worry about. It may be more expensive than getting an add on scope but this way means you have two good scopes set up properly. As I said earlier I can hit a 6" plate at 300 yards with the day scope after it has been removed and put back on so for normal stalking it'll be fine.

that's certainly nothing to moan about mate. one thing that concerns me about the add on was the clarity of the nv as I have heard that good quality glass and nv don't mix. besides the fact id have to find one that fits on the eyepiece of the z6i.

I have a sako m591
A pictinnay inference fit rail that goes onto the dovetails then I have my day scope in Warne Maxima QD rings & my NV is a drone pro

Love the set up

Spot on
No problems as yet .
I was lucky , my father at the time I was looking for them was working in the states so me & my brother gave him a shopping list & strict instructions , I basically got two sets for the price of one set here.

Just a quick question, do the Leupold QWR rings allow the photon NV to sit back far enough for eye relief?

That's the advantage of the picantinny rail - you can have your rings closer together, so that one is at the back and the other is in the middle of the rail.

For example - I have Leupold high QRW's and Mark 4 rail on my Winchester and the rings on the Photon , are at 50mm centres ie 30mm between them.
