Quick release scope mount advice

Hi all,
Im just after a bit of advice on quick release scope mounts. Currently on my Howa I have set of hawke medium steel quick release mounts and I have had no issues with accuracy but I have just got a pulsar C50 and wish to switch it .22 for rabbits.

Is there a rail I can get for the Anschutz so I can use the hawke mounts or as it will be swapped regularly is there a better system?
I’ve never used quick release mounts before so I’m a bit green on these.
Regards Dan

Yes, top tip for quick release mounts is don't buy any, return to zero is never guaranteed even with top spec mounts.

I second that for Apel swing off mounts. I have used them on two rifles, 243 and 30-06, for the past 8 years and never had to re-zero. I take the scopes off and store the rifles in safe each time

I binned the QD mount on my Drone 10 in favour of a fixed one I made which is rock solid.

Doubt or confidence is the biggest factor in shooting with kit, eliminate the doubt, gain confidence things will fall into place. You can go to any club clay ground in the country and hear the same quotes/questions
Yellow/light blue/red shade is best in glasses
Where am i missing it
Hang on I need to change my chokes for this stand...

If you want to swap scopes/thermal then just factor in to check the zero after the swap.

Other side of the coin is a 4am start for a Roe buck then you won't be rattling the wood with a zero check...!!

Some insist guests arrive also a b&b cost the evening before to check the zero for the morning...

I learnt very quickly as an apprentice toolmaker to not abuse the + or - .004" tolerance as you can't control a job working like that...

Out of interest as we all pull our shots or the animal moves a bit how do you know it was right where you aimed. As Malcom has said with his early morning Roe stalks with guests a zero check that early will not be possible.
I have checked my NV drone on last light with it being cock on then gone out foxing and missed as I pulled the shot...
kept going and shot 3 more that night...
As many say those mounts are v good.

I don't know which model Anschütz you've got.
There is a so called Multi-Rail made by Innomount which features picatinny slots as well as the option to fit Blaser saddle mounts. And this is the intesting part if you are looking for perfect return to zero properties.
They are available for a wide range of makes and models.

BTW, they also make Blaser mounts for your Pulsar.

Innomount.
Job done.

Another issue to consider is that if you swap optics from one rifle to another is that they will usually not have a common zero. So even if return to zero is perfect you will still need to rezero on the other rifle.

But there is also a solution to this problem:

Have you used this before?

I bet good money no long range target shooters use swing off mounts as they clamp their scopes down with every device known to man....lol

Like all of us we want a good repeatable zero, I get over this with 2 rifles one with a digital nv the other a z6

Both have a good zero but if I miss of pull the shot it is me not the gun.

Pretty much any rubbish mounts can be made to go on and off with repeatability...and that's the key word. You have to do everything the same each time.

Posher, more expensive one piece mounts are more rigid and allow a bit more leeway with the attachment process.

For two piece mounts, you need to make sure they are setup without any stress (usually induced by incorrectly tightening the top ring halves down).

For two piece ring mounts, put the bottom halves on the rail where you want them. While they are pushed firmly forward to engage the recoil slot, hand tighten and then torque fully. Then lay your scope in the ring halves and place the top rings on. Finger tighten the bolts and make sure the gap is even both sides. Then work in a cross pattern upping the torque in small increments on the ring bolts.

Then before zeroing the rifle have the scope on and off 10 or so times (to remove any high spots from the rail or mounts).

The procedure I use is:
Roll the scope onto the rail in the correct position. Push firmly forward while hand tightening front, then rear clamps. Then torque front, then back. As an additional step you can then double check the front and back again. Some cheaper one piece mounts benefit from this.

Some QR mounts do work
Some don’t

Leupold QR (not QRW) are excellent but mount options are limited to traditional bolt on (or slide on in the case of Sako) and ring options in 1”/30mm
I run these on a switch barrel and they do return to zero to within sub 1/4 moa
Enough that i dont check anymore

Innomount are also excellent

Not convinced by standard rail plus torque wrench approach on Tier1 or similar

Having tested them I got 3/4moa Right and Down on numerous occasions
Not game changing for sub 200m chest shots but the effect on confidence is immeasurable

I have a set of Apel swing off mounts on a 308 Rigby. Not on a rail I might add. Holds centre everytime, but there not cheap. If you are going to get removable mounts, get good quality ones.
I also have the Apel swing off mounts 1 set on my Sauer 202 in 300 win mag and another set on a Sauer 202 in 308 win . Absolutely guaranteed to hold zero a joy to use

As others have said already, there are a number of solutions-the common factor being expense.

I personally really wouldn’t bother, I’d look into separate set-ups, but then I am a ‘if it’s working leave it well alone’ sort of chap.

Multiple swap outs risk wearing out even good quality QR mounts especially the screws.
