Rare white 'stag' killed by police

That don't sit right at all, they had it contained so stay out & wait for a vet. Give the animal the same respect we do for those that don't want to be called male or female, when they get distressed its a nations problem!
That local force could have used personel with torches while vehicles park accross roads to guide its direction.
Or. It's a deer. There's too many of them .It's in season as it happens and they managed to shoot it safely. I'd rather spend the tax money on a bullet than paying the police to wave torches around.

Can't see what the fuss is about.

Meh.

Obviously managed it safely. Not sure why it's such a shame that a deer got shot? Would it be less of a shame if someone put it's antlers on the wall?

Right decision if you ask me.

Rare firstly & Contained secondly.

Had it been a large predator that had escaped a zoo, shooting it may have been needed.
But I really don't remember the last time a stray deer attacked and ate someone.

Neil.

Phone around vets who would want an out of hours call out fee paid by who? As pointed out it was contained but had it been shot with a dart and then bolts out the containment and causes an RTC who then takes the blame for that?

What is it with people on a forum for people who shoot deer not wanting deer to be shot?
Perhaps I would rather see a different end to the animal, or perhaps your more trusting than me so far as live rounds being fired (unnecessarily) in a public place is concerned.

Does the “sniper” know it’s bad luck to shoot a white fallow buck?

lots of places like the New forest white Bucks are shot on sight as they mark the herd for Poachers

tho with thermal now mainstream this is less an argument

If memory serves me right, some time back you posted about how you were ejected from an airport for chinning armed cops for the way they carried their guns which in your opinion was unsafe.
Those same cops may have been in receipt of information and operating with an elevated threat level.
You didn't know. Same as the deer that was shot. You didn't know.
I reckon you simply don't like cops having guns.

What was the backstop like? Probably of less concern than had it been a Deer Manager secondment scenario as I doubt the Police Sniper was issued with all-copper.

Gosh - can you imagine the Daily Mail’s headline if he had been:-
“COPPER SHOOTS COPPER”
Now read on………

Not at all rare.

What should they have done once it was contained then? Ask it nicely to leave?

Third thing then "stay out & await a vet"
Can you just read it, be a lot easier.

More than happy to pay towards a vet & it's continued welfare than discharge a fire arm in a puplic location. Different if it were gravely injured or of poor condition.
As many have said in the thread, such a shame.

They're discussing it on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2, I say discussing it - it sounds very one sided with lots of negatively being directed towards the Police. It's difficult to know exactly what has gone on and the decision making processes for the Police but I know that they couldn't take the risk of it injuring a member of the public. I know my local force won't shoot injured deer etc unless it is a last resort and getting a vet to euthanise it isn't possible.
No Police Officer is going to enjoy taking these actions.
People suggesting using a tranquilliser clearly have no idea how they work or the risks it involves.
