Re-barreling UK

Why is so costly to re- barrel an action over here, nearly everyone you ask oh it's going to be around 750.00 to 1,000
pounds! what's going on?
If we where in the USA we could contact E R Shaw and have an action re-barreled for 3/ to 500.00 dollars
and I am sure there would be others as cheap as well.
Rip-off England comes to mind.
Britain

Because firstly anyone can set up in the USA selling or mending firearms as a business, the amount of people wanting from very basic work right through the spectrum to world class craftsmanship on comp guns . Here any counties don't even have a guy that can chamber , thread and fit a stock blank .
Its not a get rich quick sceame either here as we have to go through London or Birmingham proof and that means driving there , you cannot post guns other than specialist firearms couriers and they cost !
Then we have alarms and security linked direct to ARV dispatch etc etc . And tge plain fact that there isn't the quantity of business to support more guys being able to make a living
Don't know how many there are in the UK doing this work commercially but I guess at not a greatbdeal more than 20 of worth ?

... again, rip off Britain

Maybe one of the issues with what is considered expensive can be explained by the variable quality of some gunsmiths work. I've seen some absolute rubbish come from self styled engineers. Some of their offerings are just junk and the poor saps spending the money just don't see that they've been had. More than once there a stony silence when he shows fellow club members his new custom or "semi custom" stove pipe. As I've said before on here one home counties gunsmith tried to convince me that he considered his rebarrelling jobs acceptable if he could get ten shots on a 1003 bm target. For you none target shooters that's a ten inch group!

On the plus side the same names come up time and again, producing superb rifles and quality repairs.

Not really just different dynamics . If there was enough of a market we would have more rifle builders but you have to look at tge percent of active shooters who actually buy custom rifles over factory imports .
Read his post, its rip off Britain not rip off England 🤭
