My buddy who is not on the stalking directory but is getting work done by James is wondering who he should be sending the bill on this thread for wasting his gunplumber's time and not getting his rifle built.....
Is it equally correct to waste every other gun smiths time for their livelihood income and to slow down the production time of work?
 
You pays your money and you makes your choice. I don't think any reputable rifle builders are short of work.
 
The machining involved in fitting a custom barrel is exactly the same whether the smith charges, £50 an hour or £150, its not a job that can be done better by one smith over another, it can only be done correctly or wrongly.
If a smith can make a descent living pay all his bills and overheads by chargeing £50 an hour for his work i would be thinking why are some smiths charging three times as much?
They do this because they can, because they know that there a bunch of people out there eager to spend their readies on a custom rifle or rebarrel, who still think there is some kind of black art involved in rebarreling or rifle buiding and only the top smiths possess this black art
Well there isnt, its basic engineering well within the skill level of thousands of turners and millers working in small engineering firms all over the country, most of whom are far more skilled machinists then any of the riflesmiths putting rifles together today in the UK.

My machining costs would be the same with any barrel, £55 an hour. If someone wants a £500 barrel then they get one, it's personal choice.

Really...funny, I haven't had any issues with them, I did have an issue with a Pacnor the other day, that wasn't quite concentric on the muzzle. Or maybe that was my inferior tooling :D
 
FFS give Jager a break guys , here we have a trade member who pays his subs supports the site , offers a free re barrel in a prize draw and what does he get slated by people who should know better . Sometimes I really wonder what some members really want to achieve with their comments.

Unfortuneatly, this is what brings the site down and why I don't pay to be a trade member anymore. But funnily enough it's the same people...hidden agendas perhaps. :D

Have to agree with that, nothing 'magical' about screwcutting and chambering.
 
I have a rifle rebarreled by James using a Bergara, a 20" .308 used for stalking. It shoots sub 0.5MOA at 100 yds off the bonnet of the truck, no doubt it could do better under a more rigorous test. Why on earth would I spend more than i have to ?
The man does a good honest job at a good honest price.

Amen to that! Fair pricing is getting harder to find. It's funny how most people will happily admit that the factory barrel is plenty accurate, but as soon as it's a re-barrel it just has to be a Pacnor or similar, otherwise it's obviously going to be ****e

That's not really fair is it, the guy made a generous offer and then the goal posts moved . I have never met or spoken to Jager and very unlikely to need his services (blaser owner) but I fail to see what you and others are trying to achieve with your faceless character attacks.

I agree .....a simple thread leads to another character assassination.... poor show.
 
Again I ask wtf has Jager done to deserve this ?
It happens every few months or so starts with a few comments then bang three or four folk lout to lynch him

So why?

Either come right out and get it off your chest or get on with it ?

Either way surely time for a lock down on this its just going downhill......
