Okay so I've booked myself and a mate some Scottish hill stalking , but I need a good case to carry my rifle around in , any recomendations ?
Cheers lads

Is this a hard case for transport or a slip type case for carrying the rifle up the hill?

If it is a hard case you are looking you might want to talk with a company local to you that makes flight cases for musical instruments. They will be well used to making all sorts of custom sized cases and will build it to your spec. Off the shelf stuff might be less expensive, and might do as good a job, but the custom facility can be handy.

My favourite case is my Webtex Sniper case. It has plenty of other storage, a shoulder strap and also 2 shoulder straps to be worn as a backpack. Padding and waterproofing are superb.

Its not expensive, its very versatile and I find myself reaching for it again and again. The olive green matches Sealand and Barbour green shades very well if that matters to you.

I've often wondered . Is it a law that requires you guys to carry your rifles in a "slip" as you call it while you are hunting ?

Is one not allowed to carry the rifle outside a case in this situation ?

In upland stalking it's usual to carry the rifle in a slip to protect it should you slip and fall, and to keep it dry in the frequently bloody awful Scottish weather. It's then carried unloaded and a cartridge only inserted justbefore taking a shot, so it's a safety thing too. But in lowland stalking, people usually carry the rigle on a sling with a round in the chamber and the safety on. Shots are a shorter ranges and with less time to prepare. So no, it's not a legal requirement when stalking. But it is when in transit and public places.

Napier Protector 1 Stalker Rifle Slip Secure, it has slot to fit a steel cable to, a zip pocket and has sufficient room for a scoped rifle with a bipod fitted.atb Tim

Got a country covers slip today for free ! In great condition too ! Total score and I'm really chuffed with it . Guy had one he didn't want so I swapped it for some oak logs !

Okay so if I happened to be in Scotland with a stainless synthetic rifle with scope caps I'd be fine and no need for a slip/case . But in the car it would be needed .

I'm honestly not sure on Scottish law, but in England that is not the case. I will frequently drive on public roads with a rifle unslipped in the car. I will walk out of my front door with one slung over my shoulder. I wouldn't do so if I lived in the middle of a city.

Well it just wouldn't be sensible. I, for instance, am right now on the nightbus on my way to mert a friend to go after woodcock and my gun is in a slip in my rucksack. It's 4.30am and I am the king of hunting by public transport. Fisguised as a hiker. Interesting crowd. Friendly people.

I would recommend a Brady sleeve with only a zip to close it. I frequently crawl across the wet moor dragging my rifle in its slip beside me. I have crawled up to 500 yds on occasion. Typically when I stop walking and start crawling, I will dump my bag and stick and just crawl on with my rifle, binocs and knife. When I eventually arrive a suitable firing point, I will unzip the sleeve, slide the rifle out and then shoot. Secondly, if I am travelling in an Argocat, the sleeve gives some protection to the rifle. It's important the sleeve doesn't make a noise, snag or pick up dirt.

I've got a Galati drag bag. Similar to Aim, but imported from the US.

Anything like this will swallow huge amounts of kit for range days, or chuck it on your back for hill work

Cheers
