I used to just use anything spare in the gun room (within reason]
Now I shoot 20b gamebore 30g 5s for everything apart from geese , where I use 12b gamebore mammoth 3s. I don't shoot on forer shore.so no need for non lead.
Any away days where games getting sold, I use steel eley vip 30g 3s
No cartridge or gun is the same, if you can, get a few different types and go to a pattern plate.. especially with steel, I use skeet and skeet and it seems to work.
If you use the same kit consistently, you can only blame yourself [ for me & poor shooting - I'm the. Common denominator ]
I load for the boss,he uses 22gram 7 1/2 from Hull Cartridges,the Pro 20 line.
Always through skeet and quarter choked guns.
I know you will be told that 7 1/2 shot won't kill game, well it does when he uses it! He will quite often shoot a third to half the final bag out of a team of 8 guns, left and rights on nigh on every drive. Last season on one drive on a noted Devon high bird shoot,3 times he had 4 dead in the air at the same time.
Chaps pegged either side couldn't believe the cartridges he was using upon enquiry, coupled with the open choked guns he uses.
Choice always comes down to what your guns patterns best with and what you're comfortable using.
Yes bud,he prefers to take double gun days, all around the country. It's certainly more relaxed for him, he's always got a loaded gun to use. Some poor guns lose out on a lot of chances due to trying to load while birds stream overhead.
Re his choice of cartridges and choke- when I first started here 22 seasons ago,he was using ounce loads of 6's and 3/4 and full choke. After watching him struggling on a day in Norfolk, I changed the chokes in both guns and got a slab of 22 gram 7 1/2's off the head keeper on the estate, who I knew.
The next day, being a double day at partridge, I duly loaded up without telling him what I'd done. At elevenses all the other guns were complimenting him on his shooting so far. 3rd drive, the next one, I told him what I'd done.
Fair play to him,all he said was " well Jess it's working so we'll stick with it"
We've used that combination ever since, it's improved his shooting IMO,he generally shoots 1 point something cartridge to kill ratio, very rarely do we get to 2 to 1 kills ratio.
Is it too nosy to ask where? That's my home county .
Double gunning is a pleasurable way to shoot driven game.
I've only loaded, but it's generally always a pleasure, especially when the gun can shoot a bit as well.
