Red deer, Woldingham Surrey

I've just seen a herd of red deer in a field outside Woldingham, Surrey on the train back from London.

The field didn't have deer fence around it, just standard stock fence so I don't think it's a park herd but I didn't know there were any wild or escaped red in this area.

There is a picture on Salisbury Plain Watch of a big red stag allegedly on the Plain.

This was a herd of about 12-15, I didn't see any antlers but was passing quite fast and was more surprised it was red deer and clearly not fenced in.

I assumed a recent escape as they were quite confident being out in the open

I wouldn't assume that they are a recent escape, don't forget that a herd was released on the common at Bisley quite a few years ago to manage the heath. Bisley isn't a huge distance away, perhaps they have spread?

The only reason I assumed a recent escape is that when a small herd of red deer escaped on the Pevensey Marshes they lasted a few months before they were all shot. Seems everyone near by thought it was too good of an opportunity to miss out on for fear that if they didn't shoot them, someone else would.

Still see them regularly on Stickledown, seeming oblivious to all the lead flying above them.

Which is why when we had them near ranmore the syndicate all kept their mouths shut and left them alone

If they are still on Ranmore it wont be long before they are all all all run over by MAMIL's !

The Woldingham Red's have been around for a while but were supposed to be under wraps! I was under the impression that there were still Red's on Ranmore?

I've known of a few places where there are secret populations of reds but they always seem to get outed on the Internet eventually. It normally spells the end of that population. One group near me got photos on the Internet and they were gone in a couple of years. Another group has had a photo put up really recently and I hope they don't get wiped out.

Well they seem very happy standing in the field next to the railway line for thousands of people to see each week (I saw them in the same spot on Thursday too) so they must be in a pretty safe location. It's nice to see they have lasted a while and have learned where is safe to stay during the day.

I have just seen them, no antlers, middle or of the field. Did a double take before searching tinterweb as I couldn't reconcile what I was seeing.
