Red stag stalking, costs?

We’re on Royal Deeside and this year have been £650+vat/stag, There’s not much in it even at higher prices when you factor in stalker, ghillie both being paid for the day and the stag being left for around 7 years plus the costs or running argos/garrons etc. i’ve always thought they’re good value even at the higher end of the pricing.

Thanks! Excellent reply. Actually one of the things I hadn’t considered in the costs,(excluding ghillie, Argo etc) was the timeframe for stag to get to that age.

Cheers!

I’d have thought the average will be around £800 this season. Some places (like us) tie the stalking to a lodge let and so are a bit cheaper, despite using garrons where we can and generally (I would hope) working pretty hard to make sure people have a great experience.

If there’s no accommodation income tied to the stalk then I’d expect to be paying more, if you see what I mean.

I think there’s been a drop in the amount of estate offering sporting stalking in the last 4-7 years with changes in deer management policy and land use… and that probably means that there’s the same number of clients trying to book fewer days.

Lodges makes a lot of sense too. Again just another interesting aspect and something I hadn’t factored in so worth asking.
To be honest seems to be more and more estates either closing their doors to stalking or shooting large numbers in the name of rewilding

Yes indeed. I know of 2 that used to stalk for several years

I got a few prices about 2 years ago and was quoted c. £1k per day for a management stag and B and B accommodation with extraction with garrons.

I am fairly sure there is next to no profit in this but the deciding factor for me I was offered management plains game hunting in Namibia for much less per day, including flights.
