Hi All,

It won't be long now till I will be off to Ireland again for some sika stag stalking and I would like to try for one of those beautiful monster red stags. Has anyone had any first hand experience or recommendations with an outfitter that would take me out to try for one?

Thanks for the help in advance

Theres not too many outfitters offering reds, those that do charge what I would consider to be eye watering amounts, around the 4K mark for a decent stag.
Have an internet search, Celtic field sports may be able to help, its already late for this season, the premium outfitters may well be booked solid.
Just as an aside, you don’t generally find big red stags in the East coast/Wicklow area, there are a few in Meath/Louth, scattered on farmland but they’re not easy to hunt.
Most of the bigger animals are West of the Shannon, Clare, Galway a few in Mayo and Sligo/Donegal.
The terrain they frequent will break your heart and the midges will suck your remains dry, but you just don’t get big animals close to the roads, for obvious reasons.
If you’re not in a rush and you visit regularly it might suit you better to find a syndicate and do it yourself.
A word of caution, they’re big, even by red deer standards. Most of them are descendants of park deer with a lot of Warnham blood, you won’t shift one without help, they tend to haft to thick cover due to persecution.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the info. I've hunted big reds in Donegal before but never found the big one I'm after only immature stags. I like hard work hunting, we pack out all our sika we shoot on the hill and we have even taken to carrying some of the fallow we shoot here in England if we cant get the 4 wheels to it, nothing like earning what you take off the land!!

This tells me that your definitely under 50 and probably under 40.
Having long since left those milestones behind me, the easier the better.
Good luck with the big ones.

Sorry to hi Jack this post but I’m just putting it out there but if anyone wants to hunt red stags in Ireland in the mid west of the country. I know a lad that has some serious stags to offer honestly this lad knows his stuff about reds.

Those night pics don`t count if the deer taken at night
I can I assure you this stag wasn’t shot in the dark he wasn’t actually shot at 20 past 6 in the evening a week before the rut he was over 200 kg. I could not move him I had to call for assistance with ropes and even that failed so my mate had to run for his tractor we just couldn’t move him, a lot of work and time goes into getting these monsters out it’s no joke I shot a spiker one day at 7 pm up in the hill by Christ did I earn that drag on my own I didn’t see my vehicle for 3 hours trying to get him off the hill pitch dark I was like Swiss cheese from the bushes and torns

There are are some big red stags around, I got this one a few years back, he came out in 6 pieces.
There was at least one more the same size on the ground but I never got to grips with him.
Exceptional stag. I’ve often had to cut them in half. 99 percent of my stalking is on my own so I don’t hunt reds much but during the rut I’ll do a few days on the reds. I’ll watch them all threw the summer and when I think the rut is in full swing I’ll observe them the lessons I’ve learnt is hard over the years pick your shots when it comes to reds
