Loading 223R powder Vit n120.50grn vmax start load 19.3grn max22.7grin. Loaded 21grn ogiv 20th of lands. Test fired 100 yes 3shot clover leaf perfect, but noticed primer had slight crater.then went to start load working up to 21grn all cases show slight cratering the case be loaded Papua match. Primers cci 400.also tried bench rest .Rifle Rem 700 24"barrel with 1 in 12 twist can anyone advise.

I would also suggest N130 or N133 would be better for 50grainers in the .223

That said, I have seen CCI 400's crater slightly sometimes on the deuce with what I know are mild loads. Not always a cause of excessive pressure IMO. If you are not getting heavier recoil, sticky bolt lift, ejector wipe etc, then it could potentially be fine. Hard to say without being part of the whole process.

I would agree, N120 is probably a little on the fast side. But not so much that I personally would change, till I'd used that pot up, if that was all I had.

As others have said, a tiny amount of cratering is not necessarily an issue. If the primer were flowing noticibly into the figing pin hole, that would be something to take note of.

Load sounds fine.

Wouldn't worry about the cratering. On a Rem 700 you'll get it anyway no matter what primers you use. Hole is too big for the firing pin.

I run 52gr A-Max in mine at 22gr Vit120. It is relatively hot, but not overly so. Still get good brass life.

Watch for the ejector plunger imprinting on the case head (shiney circle) or sticky bolt lift. They are more reliable signs of pressure.

I have developed loads for 2 rifles in 223 using 50 gr Vmax and N120. Never had any issues using Fed Gold small primers. I previously used N133 with the 50 gr bullets but found in order to get reasonable speeds it required filling the case well over 100%
