Remington 597 semi auto 22lr any good ?

Definitely consider a bolt gun. CZ/BRNO if he wants a classic rifle. Or a Tikka T1X if he's wanting to modify it a bit (stock/chassis, bolt handle, etc.).

Remington 597 has to be the worst .22lr ever made, or at the very least the most unreliable .22lr semi auto that I have ever personally encountered.

Incidentally I've seen a few different .22lr semi autos ranging from the likes of the BSA Armatic and the dirt cheap CBC/Magtech, to the H&K and the Anschutz.
The 597 was so bad that I'm pretty sure that Remington introduced a mark 2 version in an attempt to address some of the reliability issues only a few years after the initial launch. It's certainly a rifle that I would steer clear of unless I were absolutely desperate and the seller was only asking an uncle (a fiver).

I had a 597 in .22 wmr a good few years ago. The trigger was appalling but as I had a trade account at Brownells USA a replacement sear or something was easily and cheaply obtained. The trigger was thus hugely improved, the 3 round bursts were bit of a worry though.
I had one as well in WMR and as you state the trigger wasn’t much . I shot it a good bit and sorta got used to the heavy trigger and got a few decent 50 yard groups out of the gun , but it didn’t stay in my possession over a year I think .
