My .223 VSSF was 1/2x20 from memory, definitely wasn’t 1/2x28 as I’ve only ever had one rifle with that thread and it was 10 years later.

No they aren’t interchangeable but it’s easy to see the difference, the 1/2 x28 UNEF or 5/8x24 UNEF are finer (EF-extra fine).Thank you.....so the difference between UNF and UNEF is just a few threads? If I measure the length of the thread would that tell me which i need to get? Or would either work?
Sorry for the dumb question if it's a simple answer but I dont want to buy something that wouldn't work
Same, well I bought 2 on the same day, CZ550 6.5x55 and a .223 VSSF. Still have the CZ and wish I still had that .223, seriously accurate but I convinced myself I needed a 1:8/1:9 so changed for a CZ527 varmint.Excellent choice, hope it’ll account for many varmints and foxes! My first centerfire was a Rem700 .22/250 Varmint, blued metal and wood stock, always regretted letting it go…
What does the caliper say for diameter?Cheers chaps that is much appreciated!
Heres is a pic of the thread

And on SD advice I set my calipers to 1/4" and counted 5 threads so I guess it's a 5/8 24 UNF

Again thank you guys
I might have the stock a new home so just waiting for a AI chassis to come up for sale now![]()
Will check that mate, I didn't think to do thatWhat does the caliper say for diameter?
From here it looks like 1/2"x 20
Thank you that's very useful!I think you should measure again. If you count 8 crests, 7 roots, therefore 7 pitch’s you should get the following measurement
For an 18 TPI (UNF) you should measure 0.389” across 8 crests.
For a 24 TPI (UNEF) you should measure 0.292” across 8 crests.
Bear in mind that just identifying the thread pitch, and measuring the major diameter will not ensure that your thread is cut to any specific tolerance, and will not ensure that all moderators of that thread size will fit.
Remember - Put grease on your threads the first time you screw on a new moderator….
If you reseted the calipers correctly, looks like 18 TPI i.e. UNF
Got there in the end![]()
