Remington 700pps 308 Match Ammo Recommendations

Hi Everyone, new shooter, I'm looking to push my range out on my Remington 700pps 308 in 2024, I had some old club ammo PPU FMJ 145gr which were ok at 100m but they were cheap rounds, looking for recommendations for match ammo to cover 300-600y and 600-1000 yards.

Am I right in thinking I need heavier for 300-600 and lighter for 600-1000?

have been looking at the Hornady Black and Federal Gold? any advice appreciated, my barrel twist is 1-12

federal GMM is very good but my go to 308 ammo is hornady 168gr TAP ammo or with a 1-12'' maybe try the 155gr hornady TAP ammo ?

i wouldn't mess about with different weight ammo , just find one in the 155-185gr class that shoots well and use it for everything

GGG with the 155 smk will do all that. Forget the heavier/lighter thing. Find ammo that works and is in supply.
Get a 100 or 200 yd zero then work out your drops. Even better if you can get MV.
GGG 155 is around 2950fps out of a 30inch barrel. You will lose near enough 25fps per inch of barrel.

Anything with the Hornady Amax bullets or Sierra 175 SMK.

More important factor is making sure you get a decent quantity 200-300 rounds of the same lot (number is usually where the barcode is printed on the box)

what tarquin said just get one load for all ranges 155gr or 168 gr is all you need gl

I'd get a box of fed GMM, check it groups well, chrono it and run it through a calculator to check it will remain supersonic at 1000y in your rifle. If so, buy enough to last the year.

Next year, reload using those cases.

As above, readily available & consistent batch are key considerations. Also as said 155 will be fine to 600 yards with no issues & 800 should not be an issue. However, the down range velocity will be critical and this will be influenced by the length of the barrel you have, wind direction & speed will also come into play when you reach the ‘edge of the envelope’ with 155gn. Target Rifle shooters can get 155gn to remain supersonic at 1000 & 1100 yards but they make sure it’s properly fast when it leaves the muzzle by having 30” barrels, right chambers & tight bores.

You might find that for what you want you end up shooting 155gn to 600/800yards & then 175gn past that. My brother shoots an 26” barrelled AI & uses 155gn to 600 yards then switches to 175gn for 800-1200 yards. It’s easy enough to do with a decent scope with target turrets & a notebook with the info on what elevation to dial in for what bullet at what range.

Incidentally GGG used to load both the 155 & 175 Sierra MatchKings & both were available from the NRA armoury at Bisley.

There is some good quality, good value, Hornady loaded ammo around at the moment with 155gn bullets.

Main thing though, as above, I’d find something you can get consistently & in a sufficient quantity to save you having to mess about too often.

GGG 155 is around 2950fps out of a 30inch barrel. You will lose near enough 25fps per inch of barrel.

Not just barrel length reduction. TR / Palma rifles are built with tight bores (0.298" bore / 0.3075-78" groove vs SAAMI 0.300/308) and very short chamber throats. Fire this ammunition in a typical American production rifle and you lose more velocity than explained by the barrel length alone. The NRA specify that its contract TR match cartridges must be within pressure for these (non CIP-compliant) spec barrels. (RUAG came unstuck with this in its final year of NRA supply with RWS brand cartridges blowing primers during the 'Imperial' in warm weather in some rifles. When the NRA rejected the batch and returned it, RUAG tested the cartridges in a CIP compliant test barrel and it was within pressure so repackaged it and sold it on the open market as RWS 308 Match.)

Hornady Black 168g is repackaged Hornady T.A.P 168g

I’ve put it thru 4 different .308s and it’s been more than tidy in all of them

I have the same Rem PSS set up.
Shot at 1000 at Bisley last August and used the following;
Lapua brass, federal 210 primers, Vhit N-140, 43.5gr, sierra 155gr 2155 Matchking.

Borderline supersonic at 1000 but transitioned very well with no problems.
Upper limit load for my rifle so work up slowly, be careful.
Probably not a match winning load, but all shots scored well, no misses. To be honest, reading the wind for me was more important than anything else.

I also had good luck with the 190gr Matchking with N-150. Still just about supersonic at 1000 but recoil is a bit stiff. Not perfectly matched with the 1:12 twist but would just about hold 1 moa at 100 yards, and did the job ay 1000.

Again, not F class winning scores, but both loads got me out there andit was absolutely enjoyable.

Good luck, don't get too bogged down with super accuracy expectations, have fun, be safe.

I find that .308 really comes alive with 180gr bullets as they retain energy and beat the wind better at long range than lighter bullets. I run them with 42gr N150 at an OAL of 2.8 inches and get good performance at longer range. For example, this group was shot at 900yds:
