Reproofing a deerhunter jacket

Spent all day at Bisley yesterday, and it rained all day. Never stopped. I was cold and wet by the end of the day. Soaked.
Methinks my jacket needs to be re-proofed. .

Q. What and how?

Answers on the back of a used fiver to the usual address etc ...

That’s quite unusual imo with deer Hunter stuff it’s normally very good. None of mine leaks and I have a lot of it? Have you washed it or something? Dare I ask is it meant to be waterproof and not just shower proof?

Ah well probably does need a re application then. Sure it will be fine after that. I just used some generic waterproofing spray from an outdoors shop.

A large tin of tent spray or DD'S stuff both are cheap . I put mine on a hook in the shed with a poll through the arms and load it up first all the seams then once that is done the whole coat ..
My coat is also a deer hunter and it gets done every year but it is around 15yrs old .

If you get some of the grangers water repellent stuff that you wash in and then spray with a surface repellent then you should be fine.
The grangers stuff makes the fibres hydrophobic (I’m sure the water community is outraged by this) but doesn’t make it waterproof, just expels the water. So a surface coating stops it getting in.

That being said, I have owned top spec mountaineering gore tex’s which have been used in cold / wet and warm/wet conditions, as well as snow and ice, and none of them keep you dry is you get too warm.
Being a sweaty git I used to walk up to my ice climbs and then change my base layers before I started to climb simply because my shells couldn’t get rid of the moisture, even in cold / dry conditions. So expect to get as wet on the inside as on the outside if the conditions are wrong.

I read somewhere in the blurb for Deerhunter or Seeland stuff, that you shouldn't use fabric softer in the wash. It does bad things to the waterproof/breathability of the fabric.

My Ram jacket is 20 years old and started letting the water in after about 12 years regular use. I'd say that isn't bad service life for any jacket. Mind you, even from new, really torrential downpours did result in slight dampness after 30 minutes or so exposure. I've found their recon jacket to be better. Been out in all weathers in that and it's always kep me dry. I use fabsil or Nikwax wash in. All these reproofers do mostly the same thing and what isn't often remembered is to activate the polymers to aid longer term proofing, heat is needed so tumble dry after washing or after spray on treatment. You can use an iron on low heat setting too.
