Retiring the old Schrade

My mum bought me this Schrade 153UH when I was 15. It’s been my sole hunting and camp knife since then - I’ve got a real soft spot for it. However I always thought it could be improved - the clip point isn’t ideal for opening up the stomach cavity, edge retention is so so and the round Delrin handle is a bit tacky. I started knife making years ago with the intention of getting a good knife cheap :/

Anyway, I’ve finally made for myself. Feeling a bit disloyal to the old Schrade but pretty happy with how this has turned out. 1084, Sambar scales, peened rivets, 125mm blade. Yes it’s the blade is a bit long but it’s a good compromise for a knife that will also be on food prep when camping. Need to blood it now…

I had a couple of schrades. Lost one and the little folder bust it's spring. Nice steel actually.

I still have a Schrade Sharpfinger, only used in larder for skinning, useful bit of kit.

Yeah I believe they used 1095 for their carbon steel. I suspect they tempered fairly hot as they didn’t want people chipping them. I wear an original 340T everyday - love the old ones

I love the shape and feel of the Sharpfinger but I've found it to be a poor knife other than for skinning which it does very well.
