Which then raises the question of why there are so many more predators?Because simply there are now so many more predators and less prey

Is this not because we have provided an environment where opportunistic predators like foxes and corvids have so much access to food and habitat we provide that their numbers just continue to expand. Niche predators less so as they don’t gain any benefit from us and our waste. I don’t know but as a layman this would seem reasonable.Which then raises the question of why there are so many more predators?

was that the otterburn study?Indeed i believe GWCT studied an area that was keepered and then when that management was withdrawn over 10 years and the results were stark
You don’t think it has anything to do with not having higher predators controlling them?Dead obvious as touched on above - human lifestyle has created opportunities for them - whether that habitat for foxes on motorway banks/ railways - or food for crows from bins and tips - general predators are booming - all year long - when nesting seasons some their swelled numbers then hammer the prey species - Its obvious if you look
Its not that so much that the deer are a problem so much as inept deer management! One can only presume higher densities if not actual higher numbers of deer - and again think that many of the deer species are non native so it depends what time scale you are thinking

was that the otterburn study?
Theyve just been back theyre after 10yrs since study finished.
But results are pretty grim. And thats was purely predator control no habitat work.
What do you think ate all the low level predators that are currently causing the problems?Unless you are advocating bear / wolf im not really sure you are going mate

I’ll give you a clue. It certainly wasn’t the apex predators like bear and wolf

Renaturing seems to be a far better option, leave the rewilding to leftie urban eco loonies.I was looking for stuff about red squirrels and pine martin interaction and came back to this thread.
Earlier in the day a post came up on LinkedIn which made me wonder.
If the view was just an avenue of trees, would Scotland get as many visitors?
Give it twenty five years and that’s all it will be judging by the growth.
On a Fb page there was a comment about Canadians staring in wonder at our vistas. Not because they don’t have mountains, simply because they can’t see them.
On another Fb page there was a comment leave the bears alone. Would you like bear spray sprayed over you.
If bears were introduced but you couldn’t defend yourself with non-lethal ways, would you go into the woods?
There are just to many wanting their say on how things go.
Without a middle ground, or a bit of give and take on both sides it will take ages to get anywhere.
