Rifle competency qualification

Is there such a thing as a Rifle competency qualification?
I've got a client looking to sail to Svalbard. He needs to hire a rifle, to do a so he needs some sort of qualification to show he's competent. No need for a firearms license, just a new rule the local authorities have introduced.
Any ideas? I think DSC1 is a bit too much for what he needs - if its big, white, bearing teeth and charging at you.... 🐻‍❄️

I don't think there's a qualification as such (other than the DSC that you've already mentioned), but the BDS do a basic "Rifle Skills and Marksmanship" course, at the end of which a certificate of attendance is issued.

It would be helpful to know what type of firearm he/she will be handling and how the safety catch works.......

The Govenor of Svalbard recommend a rifle of min cal 7.62mm. ALthough shotguns are also acceptable. The 2 gun shops hire out rifles but don't seem to hire shotguns.
To rent a gun you need to apply for a temp loan license, including your passport and sufficient proficiency. i.e. National service, Safety course, Activity in approved gun club or in a Hunters Registry.

Most clubs now run the ‘NRA Safe Shooter Scheme’ as a prerequisite to new shooters being granted their FAC (although I understand some constabularies don’t require it). If not a member, perhaps your client could engage with a local club to secure sign off?

basc somtimes run a zoo firearms course which would be a option. i now 2 guys that did it years ago and said it was not very good but i dont now what they were expecting. they worked at a small zoo. the bds firarms course might be ok. i bet one of the training companys would do somthing for him and give a letter of atendence.

Sounds closer to the "rifle courses" that some firms provide in order to meet the criteria for the Anti Piracy at Sea teams

This course immediately comes to mind-

Though I am sure than any number of firearms training providers listed on the LANTRA website would be able to supply a course that results in some form of certification at the end of the day. However whether I personally would consider that someone was a competent rifle shot after only a very brief training course is another matter entirely especially if lives depended on it.

Speak to Myles Robertson (of MBR Sporting) & NRA Instructor @ Bisley - he delivers exactly the course the OPs client is looking for, on behalf of the NRA.
(no introductory fees required)

NRA members- Shooter Certification card, issued to allow range bookings.

Youre safe by either dint of having done a course (whooptee doo), signed off by a HO approved club, or you actually compete in the Imperial meeting.

Rifle, iron sights
Rifle, scoped sights
HME
Black Powder
Gallery Rifle

Etc etc

Bisley will do firearms safety training next weekend and will issue them with a document to that effect.
Apparently, they have done this before for groups needing training for polar bear protection in the arctic. So, this seems ideal.

So all sorted, thanks for the advice.

6 month process with most clubs
