Rifle Scabbard for ATV

Has anybody tried the hard case Kolpin type scabbard on a quad for rifle storage? They look good on paper.......

I have experience of the normal cross mounted rubber grip ones, and there is definitely room for improvement over that design.

Cheers!

Yes used and abused one for years. Personally I've fitted it to front rack i made so i don't use the Big plastic bracket that comes with it.
Never had my Rifles come out or scope lose zero.
For a mate who worried about rifle jumping out i fitted a ring both sides and attached a small Bunjie cord with hook

Sounds good, really not a fan of crossways racks.
Which model do you use? Assume you have a moderator fitted to rifle?
Can you draw the rifle from it fairly quickly?
Cheers

I have both the rubber grippy thingies on the front rack and the Kolpin plastic "boot" when I want to take an extra rifle or a shotty with me on the Quad. The bracket for it is "permanently" mounted on the right hand side of the rear rack. Just slip the boot in when needed.

I don't use the grips much as I have a toolbox mounted in front of them on the front rack. I usually pop a soft case in between them and the tool box and keep my rifle in that. Keep it unzipped for easy access.

Cheers

Thanks. Do the Kolpin scabbards take a moderated rifle, for instance an R8 with a moderator? I assume they are made in USA

My Rifles i used when i was heavy culling .25-06 Sauer 202 T8 mod Swavorski 2.5-12x56 scope with Butler Creek scope covers Yes where I've fitted mine you can reach and pull Rifle out very easy But as previously stated i don't use the Mounting system what comes with the Boot

I just looked at Kolpin web site.
Although mine is BLACK it looks similar to the Dark Camo one when i bought mine Years ago it would have been the Combi mine is like fur lined was White
How have you rigged the boot to the forward mounts? Is it horizontal ? Does the tip of it stick out past the front of the quad?

Thanks

Don't know about moderators. I live in Oz!!. But plenty of space for an O/U 28" 12g shotgun so you'll be alright. Yep, they are american made. I'll see if I can get a pic up later on today.

Cheers

****EDIT**** Some pics:
The soft case between the grips and the tool box:

The boot bracket:

The boot in place. Note that the bike is equipped to handle a number of the feral our great forefathers endowed upon us. Firearms for rabbits, foxes and deer. Spray tank for gorse :

Looks good. Didn't realise you fellas had gorse on top of everything else introduced. What do you think of the Suzuki?

I think a rifle hard tactical case, say 120cm, fastened to the front rails could work along same principles as your soft case?

The Kolpins look like you have to dismount the quad to draw the rifle. Which would not be as fast as tactical case with one fastener closed?

My first ever quad. Automatic and 4WD - high and low registers and runs in 2WD as well. It's perfect for what I need it for - zipping around my hilly paddocks spraying, fixing fences, moving cattle. I have a small trailer that I can hitch up if I need it - cutting and collecting firewood, carrying out a fallow or a kangaroo and so on.

Yes, I have it mounted like this because I keep my second firearm there. I only really mount it when I feel that I might need a shotgun or an alternative rifle for long shots. The firearm is locked in the boot and the boot is locked in the mounting bracket. Quite secure if I have to leave the bike for a while. My day to day rifle is one of my two .223's or my .222. One of these is always with me in the soft case. As I mentioned the bag is kept unzipped and the rifle is readily accessible.

Think you should be able to work something out with a hard case if don't want to go Kolpin.

Cheers

I used a Kolpin case on a quad for a while, but thing to be aware of.
No matter how you mount it parts of it will extend beyond the quad length and or width, leaving it vulnerable to damage.
If you mount it on the rear rack facing back, as per the pics above, you do need to get off to receive the rifle/shotgun, you also effectively make
it so you can only mount or dismount from the opposite side.
I decided it wasn't for me, far to many downsides and to higher risk of ripping it off the bike on obstacles, I went to a hard case across the front or rear rack
which didn't overhang the sides, much easier to get on with and if on the front rack easy to get at while on the quad, not to mention a lot cheaper.

Full agreement Neil. Sure it is good for some styles of hunting, but not for what we do.
I have found a hard case from Black Box Tactical. I think if I can do some drilling / dremeling and make it secure to front rack using some soft straps or even plastic belts. Then just have one fastener closed on the case when moving around.
Should really protect the gun and keep all the ***** off it.
Case is pretty much the same width as potential new quad....the only question is to resolve now is whether the rifle will fit.
Could probably modify case a bit as well so as to store knives / saws and similar under the foam.

Well the idea to mount a Peli case on the front rack has died a death... 1750 case is too wide for rack ( as well as extending past the width of the quad).

So looks like going to have settle on a below par solution like ATV Tech Grips.

I am sure there is some clever chap out there who can come up with a better solution....what do our German friends do? Normally a good starting point.

No idea about peli cases, but I do know my R93 in .243 fitted in a cheap plastic case across the front of a Kawasaki 360 quad without hanging out past the width of the quad.

Neil.

Moderator on in the case?
Not sure a cheaper case would take the weight of a hind strapped on top of it...? Use Peli at work and they can take a fair bit of abuse.

Mate, there's a bloke called Robbo on one of the forums down here who has a "home-made" solution on his ATV. He makes a lot of vids and in some of them you can get a glimpse of his scabbard. Have a look at his Youtube channel:

Lots of good stuff besides gun boots as well

Cheers

Mod, sort of, a Pess Mini T only 3 inches past end of barrel, can't remember barrel length though, but it was
a stock length barrel, stock was an inch shorter than normal.

Neil.

Watched Robbo last week. He certainly has got an efficient setup - he made sheepskin lined fibre glass scabbards himself?

Pretty handy to that.

Is he based in NT?
