It’s like when I was a kid, and stories of 50lb pike would come round every now and then. A grainy unverified celluloid photo would appear in a magazine with a big fish in a net hanging off scales that no one could see properly. At my school, a number of kids’ dads’ colleagues’ brothers’ mates had caught 45lb+ pike.

During a recent spell of bad weather here, I sat down and read up on Sus Scrofa and its various sub-species around the world. Quite a deep dive into research papers and so on, it was really interesting, especially the genetic / biological constraints on maximum attainable size irrespective of feed quality and availability. It’s very hard to find any evidence of massive Western and Central European wild boar greater than 200kg, that upper limit is ubiquitous from what I can see. What is interesting, is that for all the claims of colossal boar, you just can’t find reference to these monsters in the record, whether you search in English, German, Czech, whatever. Nothing.

So I remain deeply sceptical of claims of wild boar >200kg liveweight, certainly in terms of them being at all common. I’m quite sure that if they were being caught, the stories would be out there and easy to find. If a 200kg pig were caught here, it would be a nationwide sensation!

Good to see someone that requires proof rather than the say so of another man .There are very few people I’d take the word alone from .

No problem, it just interested me to know where and when it happened . Thanks for the offer but I’m not really interested in watching someone get badly harmed though as it’s not of any use to me. Cheers for posting though, it’s a sobering reminder of some of the things that happen when things go a bit wrong.
there was a Hunter in Germany who got killed a few years ago in a boar attack on a driven hunt not too far from where I hunt. From memory, he got attacked in some shallow water on the edge of a Reed bed. I think the cause of death was drowning following passing out due to blood loss from leg injuries. By the time anyone got to him he had already died. very sad.

Slight segue but in today’s papers - 2 guys tragically killed by a European Water Buffalo which they owned as part of a small herd. Apparently the bull was known to have a particular dislike for the son who was killed trying to rescue his father. Dreadful!

What happened and in which country? I hope he or she was not harmed.
I’ve always wanted to hunt and eat a bear and I must admit ,
and am quite happy to say , they scare the pants out of me. However, as dangerous as they can be, the thought of some good bear meat spurs me on. … :love: ummmm fooood.

Was in Romania he was beating through a wood an a very large Brown Bear came out there wasn't many trees to hide behind and it seemed to go past but then winded him and turned and attacked him , he got some nasty gashes on his leg and head , luckily some of the guns weren't far away and fired into the ground to scare him off it could have been a lot worse .

Not nice, I should think he was pretty freaked out by that. Good to hear he got away.
mit Just goes to show how non blood thirsty those hunters were. I appreciate that the bears are protected in Romania are they not? I’d have thought that such an attack would have warranted a bit more than shots into the ground, or was it on its way off and running away by the time they got there to help?

Thre was a story about a French hunter some years back, he came back from Quebec with his bear meat, and did a big barby for pals and family and they all went down with trichinella.

Bear hunting been illegal without special permit since 2016 numbers have gone up a lot !
