Rodger McPhail - Artist

Most folk will, I have no doubt, heard of Rodger McPhail the wildlife artist.

His latest book "An Artist by Nature" has just been released; and my copy has just landed.

Not only is he (in my opinion) a fantastic artist, he is a really nice bloke.

Nearly five years ago, I commissioned a small piece by him. I collected it from his home, on my way back down south from the Highlands - both
he and his wife (also an artist) were lovely. I was allowed to look through his studio and saw at first-hand his skill.

I am just in awe of these people.
I cannot even draw a set of curtains.

Herewith are a couple of pages from his book.

Brilliant and (to me) the world's best artist - I have two of his books ("Fishing Season" and "Open Season") and will certainly get "An Artist by Nature"

Another one who finds his work superb..... the boss has treated me to three of his signed prints over the years and I've purchased a few of his books, so another one on the "books to buy list"......

Very good. Personally I think Owen Williams is marginally better and Julian Novarol trumped them all. Except just maybe Kenzie when he was signing them off as Peter Scott. Now he was a gifted and observant painter. No training. Just a wildfowmers eye for detail an obsession with what he saw. And a deft hand

boxing or painting!!

He is a grand artist indeed.

I saw a link to his new book on the GWCT emails last week and the hints have been dropped!

I have a print of wigeon on Lindisfarne of his, for the wildfowlers amongst us you can just imagine being there.

I haven't seen any of Owens works but a good friend sings his praises

Scott's works are also great.

The ability to produce a picture that people enjoy no matter who the artist is, is an amazing talent and they are all good.

Cheers

Thanks for the heads-up on this book. Sorry sh1kar, but I can't agree on Kenzie. I live a stone's throw from Sutton Bridge and saw a bit of him when he was alive. I have also seen a lot of his work and he is not in the same street as Scott or Novorol as a painter of wildfowl. Julian excels as a painter of wet places and the sea borders.
While we think of Scott as an illustrator of nature, I have seen work by him in private hands depicting people well, which is a very different skill.
However, all of these people bring or have brought pleasure to our lives and I don't wish to start an argument !
