Roe Lung Issues

Rather unpleasant internals on a young Roe buck taken by a friend this morning. Fairly firm pus filled nodules on the lungs and some adhesion with the lungs against the chest cavity.

Body condition and behaviour all as to be expected and otherwise “normal”. Obviously condemned and not used for human consumption.

Thinking more of an extreme pneumonia type infection as opposed to TB but interested to hear what the SD collective thinks.

I'd be reporting that. I'd agree that the usual picture of lung abscesses in TB do not tend to pleurisy and adhesions that you can see, bu the enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes and lung abscesses make me suspicious. There is value in reporting these variations even coming back as normal as it shows we are doing the surveillance properly

Thanks I’ll give them a call.

Update- contacted APHA and sent over photos along with a description of my observations, just got confirmation

“Hello, just to let you know we have negated this case based on gross pathology and we suspect lesions are due to parasitic burden . Thanks for your help.”

A bit of reassurance and very helpful to have a professional opinion.

Thanks to @Buchan for the nudge to contact APHA.

Really? 🤔I wonder what type of parasitic burden they had in mind with that?

No offence or aspersions, but I’d be looking for a second opinion on their diagnosis tbh. Every day a schoolday, eh?

With you on that one, had a couple years in a slaughter house on the tools while doing my EHO degree but didnt see any burden like that if you get further info please post for interest. 👍

A fair few English roe deer reintroductions are recorded as having come from the European regions ( Scotland being a source of several populations, both Perthshire and Aberdeenshire among others). Wurttenburg being the specific European source of the roe deer in Norfolk.

“Elsewhere in Gr Britain” might cover the rest.

Interested to hear whether the lungs carried or exhibited the tan nodules as shown in the parasitic Pneumonia per the article above.
