Roe rut 2014

Out last Thursday evening and had a mature 6 point buck having a bit of bother with two young bucks. He chased one off and the other came home with me. Thought it only fair to help him out. June was a very quiet month in Berkshire or on the ground I stalk anyway.

That's one of those times it would have been good to have a video camera! :)

This year will be my 1st go calling for bucks in the rut but lately I've hardly seen any Roe on my ground, although I know they are there from trailcams and seeing a group of 11 does earlier in the year. When would you guys actually start calling? I was wondering whether it was worth trying one night this week just to see if anything reacts? I definitely have two good mature bucks on the ground that will be left alone to see the young pretenders off so maybe they are already doing my job for me!!

Excellent...can we re-name this thread 'Rut-Watch' :-D

I'll be keen to read updates as the month progresses

this thread actually presuaded me to sign up to Stalking Directory. Am up in Norfolk late July for a weekend on the bucks...my host was up there this weekend and had similar theme to report... plenty of does around and very quiet on the buck front (he saw 2 bucks and 11 does) but the bucks he saw were just beginning to push the does around. This weather, however, means it's looking good for late July...they are starting on the barley next week, for example. Keen to see how this thread progresses, and thanks for having me!

My Dad and I watched a buck chasing a doe on Friday evening near Forsinard and my Dad was keen that we went home for my rifle, but we just watched them. When I had my rifle on Thursday evening, not a roe was in sight, but I did trip over a Royal in velvet and 5 of his pals at about 40 yds. Once one of them clocked me, they shuffled off.

On Friday evening and Saturday morning the midges were absolutely atrocious. I'm still getting them in the car and itching thinking about them.

Regards

JCS

I had a text this am from a mate who saw five bucks fighting last night, included a photo of a buck he shot hat had an gored head from the mellee. Bucks seem to be on active patrol at present.

Saw a buck chasing a doe yesterday evening in North Norfolk, he was knackered and had to lay down for a rest for 15 minutes. She grazed close by until he was ready to start the chase again.
Then 1/2 hour later 3 miles away saw similar behaviour from another couple.

I was out this morning and saw a good few deer two nice big bucks. One buck was interested in the does but they just backed off. The other was more interested in chasing the buck away.So it looks like things are moving just now so I will be out as much as possible.

What all the posts here are describing is pre rut activity, its not started yet ,but things are hotting up.

As I understand it, hot, humid, stormy weather often catalyses the rut, and this is the forecast for where Foss and I are going this weekend:

Outlook for Friday to Sunday

A mix of sunny spells and heavy showers, particularly through the weekend, some thundery with localised downpours. Feeling very warm and humid, perhaps locally hot on Saturday. Warm at night.

Which means you won't see a thing!! :finger: :D

Boggy bang on mate the does do not seem to be in yet . But pre rut activity can be quite exciting and some times more productive. I find when the full ruts on the chance of a buck standing still for more than a few minutes slim indeed.

Oyyyy Stratty don't forget your first deer with me  and the one you grassed as well;):D....................and PM and his chum are out with me this weekend so I will do my best as always.

Mind you it has been quiet on the bucks lately......but he who dares Rodney he who dares

Well I went down south to my little piece of ground last weekend and saw 1 buck!! And he was just over the Boundry too , typical , saw lots of does but the bucks were hiding , on the plus sued I got 2 muntys and a charlie so it's not all bad :)
