Roe rut 2014

been out this evening - beautiful warm evening and not a puff of wind. Had a doe and calf literally graze underneath me (then doe and calf got separated by a wire fence - i hate those things - although eventually reunited). Saw a lovely 6pt buck, he is the big boy in the wood, with his nose buried up the back end of a doe, chased her around for about 3 mins but it wasn't hugely enthusiastic. He then lay down for a while and then did a little more half hearted chasing before mooching off back into the wood. Couple more does kicking about and then the mature doe spent some time chasing the yearling doe away (i suspect last year's calf?). Saw a good number of muntjac as well, all coming out to feed on the peas. One monster muntjac buck, still in velvet, but showing real promise for when he is clean. Made another very nice buck, also in velvet, look very ordinary. Beautiful evening all in made all the better by a vixen popping out the wood about 400 yards away and then trotted up all the way to me so she got filled in. I suspect the mate of the dog fox my pal shot in almost exactly the same spot a week ago. So a little bit of rutting action, first i have seen this month in Oxfordshire, but not anything close to heated action - they're kind of having a drink at the bar getting to know each other stage....more to follow

Went out for an unarmed walk last night just to see what was happening. Tried calling two different bucks with no joy, then a doe on her own, again no luck. Hasn't even started here yet but will see what happens in Wiltshire next week.

Report from a mate that that seems to be the rut started in Lanarkshire now. Buck came to the call this morning.

Two bucks out this morning and the largest buck was extremely territorial and chased the wee yen.He ran for his life and didn't stop .

I was out with Diver Dave last night on my estate near Alford Aberdeenshire and saw lots of rutting activity. There was a very large buck chasing a doe in a figure of eight right in front of us. Unfortunately, and typical of a woman, she led the buck into cover. Dam.....

A very pleasant evening seeing lots of deer but not getting a shot, but hey ho that's stalking.

Looks as though the rut is starting to get going here in Aberdeenshire.

No signs in Somerset yesterday, I saw plenty of does and a couple of bucks but they didnt step out from the cover.

. . . walking the dog just after lunch on a bit of rough ground near me in South Lanarkshire when I heard a squeaking that (for a change) wasn't a buzzard. Looked in front and only 100 yards away there they were; he was trotting after her with his nose up her tail and she was definitely encouraging him. I whistled the dog in, which didn't distract them! We turned back and left them to it.
Shortly after that the heavens opened and me and the dog got soaked.
. . . later in the afternoon (rain stopped!) while putting up a high seat on an adjacent patch, I could hear another doe squeaking near by!

alasdair.

Called a buck in last night. Alternating between nordik roe and buttolo. picked him up at 500 yds and he came in slow. lost sight of him at about 40 yds and coaxed him in with very soft pheeps on the buttolo. My uncle (80) who I had down and hadnt shot a roe for 20 odd years was pretty chuffed to say the least. He had never seen a roe being called in before.

Well done Pete we have them chasing here and I will be out with the call tomorrow and Saturday just to see what's about.

Buck and two does in the field at the back of my house yesterday afternoon, lathered up chasing, entertained my 3 and 4 year old grandsons calling the buck in with the buttolo.

Bxxxer need it to hold off for a fortnight yet, usually the end of the month on my ground so we will see.

I was out on Tuesday night approx 5 or 6 miles outside Perth and saw a few does on their own, then came across another doe with two young bucks in close proximity but the doe was not interested in them and they were more insterested in chasing each other around in circles. My father was out in a different part of the farm and he saw three bucks and several does and likewise they were showing no sign of rutting.

The rut hasn't started hear yet, I would think nearer the end of the month is more likely.

Aye I hope so, but most of my ground is a 100 miles from here to far to pop along for a quick look

Out this evening - still very warm, and saw a small 6 pointer chasing a doe

around. It lasted 5 mins till they were out of sight. Looks like the weather is

bringing them up to speed.

Not much sign of anything happening rut-wise last night down in Hampshire either. We are in for some hot and sticky weather in the South though so maybe that'll get them going!
