Roe rut 2014

I was out last night testing the new tripod by lamping a few bunnies with the air rifle and ND 100. heard a commotion to my right and flicked the light on to find a doe charging towards me pursued by a buck. they just missed me, going round the other side of a bush, then circling back out into the open and stopping to graze about 40 yards from me.

they certainly couldnt see the green light and were presumably too pre-occupied to scent me,

Just arrive home after a couple of days at the roe, the rut is DEFINITLY ON where I was, Northumberland, all be it at it`s early stage, as the next few days pass they will know what's going on and how to get it

Took into custody 4 handsome chaps all came with a doe on the end of their noses to the Nordik call .... like bloody steam trains, thick necks, massive knackers, but still a lot of fat round the kidneys and pretty much normal size stomach, which would indicate that it`s just the beginning

The weather was perfect , muggy, sultry 22 degrees, showers, and at 4.30 this morning it was thundering, spot on for a change, saw quite a lot of does all came bounding to the call, very impressed with the Nordik call, I thought it was a rip off of Richard Priors call I had donkey yonks ago but its a lot better and it works

I was out with Diver Dave last night on my estate near Alford Aberdeenshire and saw lots of rutting activity. There was a very large buck chasing a doe in a figure of eight right in front of us. Unfortunately, and typical of a woman, she led the buck into cover. Dam.....

A very pleasant evening seeing lots of deer but not getting a shot, but hey ho that's stalking.

Looks as though the rut is starting to get going here in Aberdeenshire.

Funny how just a few miles things can be so different. Was in among the stags yesterday at the Alford side of Lumsden and in the evening the sheltered side of the trees had 11 roe, including 4 bucks and no interest off any.Did watch 1 buck wander around a click over open ground so he was maybe looking for a sniff.Nothing at all locally here either but plenty time.

Just got back from an evening stalk in Kent and can confirm that there is no buck activity as yet, probably a week or two away.

Lots of bucks charging around chasing does from the 17th,shot 1 last night and 2 this morning, nothing coming to
the call though.

Carl is friendly chap, and was more dissapointed than i that a buck wasnt grassed.
The morning stalk saw, Roe buck 1Nearly stood on it before we saw it, no shot. Roe buck 2 Walked up tram lines in the wheat. Unable to shoot as it was to close, 5 yards close, held with a call but unable to see enough of it through the wheat to get clear shot before it bolted. Roe buck 3 Saw monster buck but couldn't get shot on it due the overgrowth.
Evening saw us out again, took longer to find a beast but we managed one in deep cover. Roe Buck 4,
Spung up from deep cover right by us, again no shot.
Enjoyable day and will be going back, just need to sort out the calander.
Thanks Carl

Seem to be plenty down our end in Devon, not all reacting to the call though.

Last Wednesday!

I was shooting some rabbits very early morning with my 22 in outskirts of Aberdeen when a Doe, being chased by a Buck, ran past me. They did a lap of my Landrover and then ran off before I could change my 22 for my 308! Not a total loss, as I shot the rabbit that I had been looking at (before the Roe “flypast”) and then travelled to the Highlands for a pleasant days Red Stag stalking :-) Going back to have a look for that Buck tonight...

Just seen roe rutting at Arnside in the fields, they have been very close over the last few days and and looks like its on here, best get out this week and make the most of this fantastic time of year :-)

This evening I called a buck in from just over 600 yards, I used the cherrywood call. I videoed the whole event. He came in fairly steady and stopped less than 40 yards away. Alas, he was not the buck I was after, so he was spared.

I will try and edit the video tomorrow and upload to my youtube channel.

This was in the south midlands.

Out again end of this week for a good buck with clients so hopefully will see some positive action. Trouble is most of it can carry on under darkness so one never knows, but hopefully we will get lucky.

Just back in, lovely evening, saw a lot of roe and muntjac. Saw a yearling buck chasing a little doe but very half heartedly and then the big buck i have been seeing regularly came galloping out, picked up a doe and chased her back into the wood. However definitely not hot on the rut here on my patch of Oxfordshire. Then the thing i love most about this time of the year is the ability for surprises. I am sitting in a high seat on the corner of a wood and i look down a track into the wood and see a buck moving fast down towards me and the edge of the wood. Nose down and clearly on the pull so to speak. He came bursting out of the wood and then headed straight away from me. I saw immediately he had a malformed head, gave him a quick whistle and he stopped and i necked him. What amazes me is that i have had trail cams all over this wood for the last few months, all part of my project, and he has never appeared in a single shot. No idea of where he came from but that is what i love about the Rut, throws total curve balls out so to speak. Lovely evening all round but definitely not rutting hard. This buck had oodles of fat inside him.Malform 21072014 Bould.webp

re. those Trail Cams not having got him, I'd be camera shy with a head like that!!
Nice write up, thank you.

I must be doing something wrong, have been out twice on two different bits of ground where I see Roe fairly often,
not a thing showing except Fallow, 17 bucks in one group, and an assortment of bucks and does all over the place.
On three occasions when I have called however Fallow does came running out for a look see,
one walked right under the seat and didn't have a clue I was there.
Last year when i called the Roe came from all over the place, every year its different, that's what I love about it.:-D

Roebuck lottery

I'm going out to a bit of ground tonight I recently got permission to manage the deer on but have only seen muntjac so far. I might give it a go with the buttollo to see what happens.

You think it's a good idea or not?
