Roe Rut 2015!

Gloucestershire, Cheltenham area, 10 August 2015, PM:
After a stalk around my very dense and overgrown woodland (spotted one Roe doe) I settled in a high seat for the last 30 min. of light. The high-seat overlooks a ride for some 120 Yards uphill. One Muntjac buck crossed the ride (approx 80 Yards out) but wouldn't stand still and disappeared into the bush. I tried the Buttolo call to get it back closer to me. By now I was quickly loosing the light. With the Thermal Viewer I spotted a Roe slowly walking towards me, downwind from me, and it didn't seem to matter. The light was so bad by now (approx. 20.30 Hours) that I had difficulties seeing if it was a Roe doe or a buck, and high grass didn't help. By the time I had positively identified it as a buck, some 20 Yards away, and switched the viewer for the rifle, the buck was circling me and barking, but I couldn't pick it up in my scope (6x42), just in the Thermal. So no shot attempted, on the basis that it will be there another day. This was only the third time this rutting season that calling had any effect at all.

Out this morning in Surrey. Parked car at 5.50am. Saw buck at 80 yards, having moved only 10 yards from the bonnet. Lay down, shot it in the neck at 80 yards. That is 4 roe bucks in a fortnight and 1 miss. Doe feeding in the field next to him, not reacting to the call. Buck sitting on the edge of thicker grass eating. Incidentally, called in a buck whilst dog walking yesterday (with bright yellow board shorts and a horrendous bright surf shirt) ...called in a buck no sweat with the Buttolo!

Called in roe buck in the mist at 7am on dog walk today. Classic rut stuff, moving around to the scent, shot with my walking stick on 5 occasions. All perfect heart shots. It only goes wrong with a rifle! Call ranking for this rut, for me, Cherry 1st, Buttolo close second, Nordik call 3rd barely beating grass 4th.

My family and I watched eight roe this afternoon from a birdwatching hide at Insh Marshes, close to Kingussie and Aviemore - three couples, one with a calf, and one lone male that the other males chased off if it came to close to their doe. The rut appears to still be very much in progress this far north, with the biggest buck of all walking along with his nose jammed up the behind of his doe, much to the amusement of my small children!
My wife and I always wanted the kids to be interested in nature and what's going on around them and today was just great, with birds including an osprey, moths, many different types of trees and all of those deer to watch.

Stalked a buck for 2 hrs tonight...it kept coming back to the call but was very jumpy...took the shot after it ran around a back to me...missed ...not a happy stalker tonight..i took it off the sticks and as i pulled the trigger i rocked back on my heels.. i do feel i rushed the shot so i am to blame... :-( well we cant win them all i suppose ..back for him tomo night..

Been out last couple days AM & PM watching a buck chasing a doe around the fell.I had a chance last night and had it in the sight but as it was getting dark and light was pretty bad and it was well over 200 yards I gave it up.I was afraid I made a bad shot and I would be up on fell all night looking for it.
Went out this morning at 0430 and as it got light there it was again with 2 does.
I must have spooked it because it took of into the forest and I never saw it again.
Saw 3 bucks in total over the couple days all with does but never got a shot.

was in pigeon hide last Saturday, saw buck following a doe, same farm yesterday different field saw same poss the same buck. latest ive seen for a few yrs.
Out tonight for daylight fox and taking buttolo caller.
