Gloucestershire, Cheltenham area, 10 August 2015, PM:
After a stalk around my very dense and overgrown woodland (spotted one Roe doe) I settled in a high seat for the last 30 min. of light. The high-seat overlooks a ride for some 120 Yards uphill. One Muntjac buck crossed the ride (approx 80 Yards out) but wouldn't stand still and disappeared into the bush. I tried the Buttolo call to get it back closer to me. By now I was quickly loosing the light. With the Thermal Viewer I spotted a Roe slowly walking towards me, downwind from me, and it didn't seem to matter. The light was so bad by now (approx. 20.30 Hours) that I had difficulties seeing if it was a Roe doe or a buck, and high grass didn't help. By the time I had positively identified it as a buck, some 20 Yards away, and switched the viewer for the rifle, the buck was circling me and barking, but I couldn't pick it up in my scope (6x42), just in the Thermal. So no shot attempted, on the basis that it will be there another day. This was only the third time this rutting season that calling had any effect at all.
