Afternoon all,

I am currently looking at getting a roof tent for use this summer on a tour of the UK with some mates. The tent will also be used for work, stalking, and foxing.
I am 6’ 3” so also don’t know if that would limit my choice.

Applying to the hive mind of SD I had a couple of questions before I part with any funds:

Are there other ways of achieving the same( bivi bag/small tent/ sleeping in back of car) and are they worth the faff

What roof tents to people currently use

And how people have got on with them, are there any niggles or associated issues people have had?

Re other ways, mainly for stalking. Well it’s all just more damn kit to humph about which is a minor pain. The biggest issue with tents are the availability of the site. Bivvy bags and sleeping systems do have their attractions but of course there are environmental factors- primarily midgies for me, so that’s the end of that.

My solution is to kip in the car when nights are short/er or go for the day when they are longer.

Tent box is an attractive option if it fits the existing car and the use justifies £1k+. I for one would want to make sure I could get comfortable in it though. I can be a grand better off and slightly uncomfortable in the car if it comes to it

I have been thinking about buying a roof tent for ages and have been to look in the showrooms.

currently I just sleep in the back of the 4x4 if I am not in a hotel.

there are three types of roof tent.
1. canvas flip out. IMO these are a faff to put up so I discounted getting one of these.

2. the box ones. I would consider one of these.

3. the wedges. I would consider one of these as are they are the easiest to put up and close down but your feet will touch the narrow end. you can stand up a bit as well.

3A. there is a wedge crossover. this is a wedge shape but with extra feet room.

so in an ideal world the last one is the one I would get.
 
I’m curious as I get so sleepy after lsmpung etc. My query with them is having to find flat ground to park up, and then how long it takes to set up etc. Going to the shop etc, does it become a faff or is it a 2 min job and you can leave all your kit in. In my old car the seats dropped flat and so at 6’1” there was just enough room to sleep flat. I’d probably prefer to tow something more accessible.

From what I’ve seen they are all fairly easy and quick to put up.

I think some let you leave your duvet etc in, others don’t. Think that is about all you can include.

All the ground we have for stalking and foxing is steep, but has flat areas and forestry tracks that we can park up on as well.

the wedge clamshell ones can have stuff (clothes and bedding left in them). the wedge shuts in about 20 seconds as you just pull down one side and flip 2 catches.
the box ones need the sides tucking in a bit and you have to close both ends.
 
Im seeing more of these mounted onto of a small trailer towed behind so your not way up in the air ...
Lads on YouTube with clamshell ones saying problems with mould and condensation but I think depends on material clamshells made of?

@VSS He has had one for years . When at the stalking show in lookedcat what time has again with the other ones that ukdtr where using. For me the wildland Tim / VSS had was what suited me

yes I have heard the same. but its just like a tent you have a allow airflow and drying out if it gets rained on.

I have thought of putting mine on a trailer.
It's just storage for the trailer for me

The Lads will love it and you will still be sleeping in the car
 
I have a little Erde 162 that I could mount bars on. The dogs and kit take up too much space in the car for me to sleep there easily. I suppose an alternative is to put a lid etc on the trailer to use as a kennel and for kit, then keep the car as my bed?

I have a pot with a tight fitting screwtop in the tent at night for that very purpose.
I quickly learnt that kneeling in the open doorway at the top of the ladder and pi$$ing into the wind wasn't clever.
