Rubbish

Country highways always littered for miles and just out of the main service centres that are operated in conjunction with Maccas are so common here.

It's easy. Anyone that is fit and able to work, but chooses not to is your answer! Yes you can have your benefits - right after you've spent 37.5 hours per week in a Hi-Viz vest with a bin bag clearing up your local area! I suspect this would also lower the unemployment rate too!;):cool:Simple!MS

The council workers' unions would never allow it, even though it would have popular support.

Litter is one of those things I have a massive problem with.

It has gotten worse over the years. I am shocked at the amount of rubbish that accumulates against the new concrete central barriers on the motorways. Have a look next time your in a traffic jam, its incredible and also dangerous that that amount of debris is lying on the roads. I once yelled at a postman who was leaning against the window of the post office and opened a new pack of cigarettes and threw the cellophane on the ground even though he was standing next to a bin. I also once stopped a group of very well spoken teenagers from getting on a train until they picked up the cans, bottles and crisp packets that they had just dropped on the platform.

I don't think that getting the unemployed to pick up litter is a good idea, i think it's a GREAT IDEA. It's not like they are taking a job away from someone else because nobody else is doing it. Whatever happened to the old clean up Britain campaign.

Most council workers esp street cleansing are agency workers these days as most county councils put it out to the private sector
i don’t blame outlets I blame the scum who chuck it out the window
i caught a guy at a retail park chucking the package from his expensive aftershave on the deck , I tapped on his window and promptly fired it back in ✅ his family where gobsmacked

In the dim and distant past I observed a bloke chucking rubbish from his car boot into a ditch full of water. I stalked him and made him jump about 3ft in the air when I said "Get it out and back in your car or you will follow it". His immediate answer was "Or else". Five minutes later very wet and soggy he was still trying to get out of the water. I suppose now I would be languishing in a cell for 6 months, but then when I gave his reg number to, and told our village Copper he just laughed and said he would follow it up with a caution to the bloke.

How about a car Reg label on the bags of all drive through that’ll slow em down a bit after a few nicks and hefty fines

put the onus on the driver.

Create a revenue to clear some some of the rubbish up as well

...on the bags, plus every box, cup or wrapper they are filled with, then a fine per item...

From time to time, the road verge into Weymouth is coned off for litter picking. The trucks all have council logos on them.

Perhaps a, possible, solution to the litter would be to do like the American State of Washington. There, if you are caught, even by another citizen, littering, it is a $1000.00 fine, mailed to your address. If you do not pay the fine, within 30 days, you are found in contempt and are arrested and spend, at least, 30 days in the local jail; for the first time. After that, the fine and penalty go up. The person who caught the culprit only has to take a picture and call it in, and they collect $500.00. Although there are, unfortunately, still those who litter, there are far less than there were. If they haven't learned their lesson, they are either too broke or are in jail and can't do it.

As for the rubbish collections, or lack there of, I have reverted to placing ALL rubbish in the grey bins. The collectors won't take the blue ones if there are recyclable marked wraps or bags visible. The 'claim' is that it is in the 'contract' not to accept any bags or wraps. Seems to me that someone was somewhere on a beer break when the contracts were negotiated. Most wraps and bags, today, are recyclable, and are marked accordingly.

I've started walking the local cycle/footpath network as a part of my get fit scheme & they're filthy dogs' toilets. plastic drinks containers everywhere & beer cans strewn around every single bench.
What really gets me with some of the disgusting scum who take their dogs out for a **** is how they collect it in a bag, then hang the bag off the hedge.
Do these a**seholes think this somehow makes them better than those leaving the **** on the ground.
Bring back the dog licence & make it enough to pay for effective & visible enforcement.
Start hitting litter & crap spreaders with a £1,000 fine & if they can't pay, put them on 200hrs CS cleaning up the kind of mess they made.
Not that the councils seem to make any real effort at enforcement anyway...

+1 As I understand it, there is, already, a £40 fine, as with all good things, it is not enforced. I see it as, absolutely, pathetic that the council provides the bags and bins and not 20 meters away there are more dog droppings that will fit in one bin. This is, mostly, from the locals. I guess they figure it is by the ocean and no one saw them so it is okay to make other animals sick.

You can moan all you like but that doesn't get anything done you will not change most of these idiots. You have to be a better person I regularly walk my end of the road and pick up the litter. Even a small amount of action is better than just moaning and keep saying something has to be done. (After reading all this I think I will expand my walk a bit more because it depresses me looking at it on my drive home)

i do we the old guards that have lived in the street for 30 yrs + care and end up clearing the crap up the scum feel its ok to leave we pick up the black land mines and bin it we also salt our old folks paths and shop for the ones that need it its the scum that has no clue how to behave that's the problem in our town . stabbing for phones from school kids muggins from overseas visitors etc . yup iam moaning about scum that won't play or wont to become thoughtful adults ?
