Hi all, I’ve just put in a variation and put a deposit on a Sako 75 6.5 x 55. Any of you guys got that set up and if so what factory ammo do you recommend?

I have shot Federal, Norma, Sako, Hornady and Winchester offerings through my 6.5x55mm.

The two makes that give me the best results on paper and game are Hornady 140gr SST and Sako 120gr Powerhead II.

The Hornady offering contains lead. If you are happy to use lead, I think Hornady edges the Sako [Barnes ttsx copper bullet] on knockdown effect. The Barnes will pass through domestic deer at closer ranges where the Hornady is more likely to expand/break up within the animal.

But at closer ranges, the 6.5x55mm Sako ammo definitely expands 2x diameter causing fatal wound pathway.

One example of Hornady SST retrieved from a Nyala I shot in Limpopo last year using the 6.5x55mm. The shot was 80m ish, no passthrough, full energy dump within antelope:

Thanks. I will definitely try these. Fantastic beast

I’ve taken my Sako 75 6.5 from Sweden for moose to South Africa for Kudu. I’ve stuck with 140gr ammo for everything. Currently using Federal Powershock. No complaints so far.

I have used 140grn Federal Powershock in my 75 but currently on 140 grn Hornady Superperformance, both shoot very well. I would try PPU first though, if it shoots it well its alot cheaper than the mainstream ammunition.

A friend is using the sako Gamehead II with the 120gn TTSX Barnes at present. Was being used last week on sika and reds to good effect. It was also one of the only 6.5x55 factory rounds that displayed quoted velocity when chronographed.

I'm using a synthetic stainless 75 in 6.5x55. The only factory ammo I've tried which it didn't like was Prvi, but that's not to say yours won't like it. Rather than worrying about what you should be looking for I'd concentrate on the bullet being a good performer on the size of animal you intend to shoot. Mine shoots well with most things from 95gr V-Max to 156gr Norma. Besides that it's a lovely rifle, I'm sure you'll do well with it.

I have a Sako 75 6.5x55, and use 139gr PPU and plan to continue. Cheap enough to make reloading pointless for my shooting, and I still make some money back on the empty once fired cases!

Used Norma oryx prior to finding the PPU, and it upset my wallet greatly.

Both went bang, and killed things dead.

PPU are probably more accurate than I am 😂 and work well on fallow/roe. Overkill for foxes, but a dead fox is a dead fox. I’d always suggest trying them first just because of their sheer value, and only change if they don’t suit your needs/rifle.

I shoot Hornady 140 SST out of a S/S 75 and they group very well. Not had much luck with the PPU but think I should revisit this for the cost 😀

also interested in trying the Sako 120 power head next
