Sako 85 mounting Britannia Ultra Low rail specifications?

Hi all,

I'm trying to find the specification height for the Britannia ultra low rail for a sako 85 .308. I have just fitted the normal Britannia rail and with the lowest rings on my scope (34mm tube), I have 1.8cm between the bottom of the scope objective & the barrel. The standard bases that mount to the dovetails on the rifle are approx 0.8cm and the rail is approx 0.4cm.

The Britannia Ultra low rail mounts direct to the dovetail's, but I can't see any spec on the internet for the height. If anyone has one and can measure that would be greatly appreciated!

The problem is the 34mm tube, but not in a position to upgrade to a 30mm scope tube yet, so trying to make it work for now. The gap between barrel & objective feels huge at 1.8cm!

Top of the dovetail to the highest point on the pic rail is 9.5mm. Got one used example here BTW. It’s got a small mark where it’s been dropped or something, but a bit of permanent pen will sort that.

It’s only looks that are affected. It won’t cause zero shift or issues with getting the rifle zeroed.

Personally I prefer the Near rails from Canada.

Your current setup is a rail on a base of some sort so you have the 9.5mm rail plus the thickness of the base? If you go Britannia ultra low or similar then you will save the thickness of the base so your 18mm gap will reduce by the base thickness at least.

I can’t remember the name of rings I’m using but any lower and the turret housing won’t fit.

The rail is 0.4mm high and the bases are 0.8mm high, so 12mm. If adding the ultra low rail that is 9.5mm - 12mm = 0.25mm. That was my calculation and thinking.

If you're only shooting 100-200 yards then why bother with the rail? - you're just over complicating things! Just get a set of the optilock 34mm rings & fit to the optilock bases, job done! If you're worried about the rings coming lose then use some loctite & hold the ring in an adjustable spanner when doing up the machine screw.

The only optilock 34mm rings from sako are the TRG line that are phosphate and don’t come with the plastic insert.

If using optilock based I believe that Blaser rings fit but there are also Spuhr rings that fit.

Personally I prefer the look of a rail and the ability to swap out scopes such at NV use.

Yes Agreed you can't buy optilocks in 34mm anywhere for the Sako 85. I think I'll carry on with the rail I have now and look to upgrade to a lighter stalking scope next year.

Great choice of scope. I’ve got two. I wouldn’t be worrying about that mounting solution.

Near rails a stainless steel and are interference fit. No bolts so I think look better. Best part is there is no import fee from Canada anymore. Just make sure you request the full length picatinny rail or they do a cutout like I have got.

Scotch egg, funny I was reading all about the Near Stainless rails last night. Think the are 225$, which is about £135 + the postage. If I keep the scope I will order one. I also read about making sure you order the full length as someone got caught out with that before.

I use one on my 25-06 very handy to rotate day scope and NV. No complaints from me

No it works a treat on need to rezero - if anything i wish i had bought better quality mounts but its sub 1/2 shift on point of sim each time, which is better than my shooting anyway
