Sako 90

The bedding.

85 has a very odd arrangement with a little metal plate screwed into the stock that mates with a small round lug on the action. It can (and often does) cause problems with accuracy.

The 75 had a very chunky recoil lug that was part of the action.
My 75 didn't.... It had a separate lug that slid into a slot in the action and was held in place by a grub screw

Might be in the wording but are you not thinking tika 595 ? Not very familiar with the 85 , i tend to prefer the 75 to all the others they have made , indeed besides that Canadian copy / improved version with the McMillan ( a mod i did years ago to my 75) I dont think there has been a better deer rifle personally .
Had a 595 tikka and found the lug set up very strange , it worked though i ended up doing a glue in on the lug on my now long gone 595 tikka .
wouldn't avoid buying an 85 , i would however search harder for a 75

No - the 85 has the funny little metal plate too.

My wording was off with the 75. As others have pointed out, the lug was not actually integral, but screwed on.

+1

Not having had a hands-on with these new rifles yet and only having seen the pics on the website, I must say that the 90 Hunter walnut is an extremely handsome piece of kit. Clean, sleek lines without any unnecessary embellishments.

Cheers
Having just handled one at Elmia I would agree. I didn't get to take it out of the stock to look at the recoil lug arrangementet but overall a positive impression. Interestingly they have gone retro Tikka/Sako with the checquering. The easily adjustable trigger also seems a Nice touch. The worst point was the price, but I am a tight git who doesn't need any more rifles 😋

Come on now! That’s a bad analogy. That’s like saying a 1 lite hybrid is better than a v8 because it’s 100 year old technology!

It’s got the least 500yd drop of any main stream chambering (including the more modern 6.5CM) and lots of factory ammo options and availability.

Granted there may be better target specific chamberings, but the Sako 90 is clearly not intended to be a target rifle.

After I got my head around how to bed the 85 I prefer bedding it to the 75. Just bed it like a T3 with T3 recoil lug and throw away the L-plate.

This!

My .260 Varmint sits in a GRS stock insetted for the 85S action. The stock comes with a Tikka style floating recoil lug that fits into the slot on the action. Any rifle bedder worth his salt should be able to do the same thing on a Sako stock - at least the walnuts and laminates.

One thing: does anyone know if the horisontal plate thingy is used on the Sako "plastic" stocks?

Cheers

I would like to know the same thing, particularly in relation to the wood stocked 90 Hunter.

That mickey mouse tin and woodscrew arrangement on the 85 is very poorly designed.

Hopefully one of the dealers on here will get a chance to pull one out of the stock and let us know.

Just had a new look at the Sako website. The introductory blurb for the Hunter model now lists a few more calibres and chamberings:

The calibers options for the Sako 90 Hunter are: 222 rem, 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7 mm-08, 308 Win, 6.5x55 SE, 270 Win, 30-06 Sprng., 8x57 IS, 9.3x62, 270 WSM, 300 WSM, 7 mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 375 H&H Mag.

On the other hand the more detailed specs still start with the 22-250.

Cheers

The recoil arrangement is the same as on the 85.
The problem with that seems to me to be that the owner does not check the action screws often enough...
