Sako L-61

Now here is a very special rifle. Years ago I was young and good looking. But now I am old and fat.

Anyway, when I was young I always wanted a Sako. I used to drool over these rifles. But I was too poor back then and owning a Sako was always a distant dream.

So when I saw this rifle for sale, I bought it right away. It is a 1973 Sako L-61 in .30-06. It is in excellent original condition and it is a time capsule. Back then rifle stocks were all lacquer finished. Remington started the trend by using the same lacquer that was used on bowling pins. I think the finish was called RKW or something

Anyway, this glossy lacquer finish was a sign of the times and I find it strangely charming--like polyester leisure suits and Elvis-style sideburns

The rifle wears my favorite scope, the Meopta 6x42. The glass is so bright that you can almost see into the future and the rifle shoots as good as it looks.

My day to day culling tool is a 591. I don’t think you can beat an old sako, although it is booked in for a rebarrel at the end of this season (April). Not too bad for 30 years old.
