Sauer 404

Evening,

Been toying on a 404 for a long time now, love the look and feel, cost has just put me off, but with the 505 introduction they
Seem to have come down in price at some shops.

All I see are pros (foes tinted glasse)? Are there any cons to the rifle and silence or standard.

TIA

I have heard that the SUM (scope mount system) is not the best on the 404. This has been replaced by the Blaser scope mounting system on the 505. Disclaimer: I was told this by someone with 505s in stock. I’d have either in a heart beat

404 mounts are fine. I swap around 3 scopes for different barrels and they slip on and off with ease, with no loss of zero........the real issue is that they are just stupidly expensive..........
Thought they should be ok on a quality rifle. Thanks

That’s interesting… I’ve seen a couple of 404s at sensible money and very tempted indeed but hesitant based on the advice I’d received. Harry on the Deercast mentioned that he’d had a few issues too (although doubting myself now). I’ll watch this thread develop with interest but very glad to hear that you’ve had no issues @3595wilk

Out of interest, do you have the Sauer saddle mounts? Not sure if anyone else makes them for the 404. As you can see, I’m now thinking deeply about the 404 again 🫣

Yup have the standard SUM saddle mounts on 3 scopes and a rail version too.

The Sauer SUM system takes Sauer and Blaser rings. Sauer don't advertise it as they try to cash in though....

Any ring made for the Blaser system - such as Tier One or Spuhr Blaser rings - are interchangeable with Sauer. You need a tiny hex key to swap then over as one ring release bolt sits underneath the rail recoil lug....but doable.

I swapped a set of Sauer 30mm rings over for a set of Blaser 34mm rings on one my SUM rails ......

Innomount and Rusan make SUM alternatives ..... as do a couple of other German manufacturers....and they are still £300 plus. Cheaper than Sauer though at about £450-500!!

But if you do go down the Sauer line, feel free to drop me a message, or see my post for Sauer SUM mounts for sale ......I have a fair few half the retail price in shops ...... brand new.

My Sauer SUM failed but I replaced it with Innomount’s version and found it easier to use and just reliable. I now have two and prefer them to the SUM. They are also much cheaper but that wasn’t my motivation at the time.
