save our veteran dogs

If they are "war dogs" aka attack dogs, then, like old fox hounds it is probably kinder to put them down. If they are search dogs I don't know enough to make a decision. The worry for the MoD is that they are damned if they put them down and damned if they don't and they either bite someone or become mentally affected like some captive animals do in zoos.

General Police dogs usually retire at around 8. Amongst their other duties, they are trained to chase and bring down suspects and to bark and show aggression in public order situations. Most of them live happy lives after retiring, often but not always with their erstwhile handlers. There may be a problem with army dog handlers keeping retired dogs because of the mobile nature of the work, but I’m sure suitable owners are out there. Signed.

signed, perhaps if a humans becomes mentally affected by ptsd or from his/her service we put them down too.these animals saved lives and should be looked after.

Signed, and pointed out there are qualified handlers willing to give them a home and a good life, after the service they have given to our country
MOD shame on you to even think about this,,,,the easy way

Done. Lots of respect for the dogs and the people that train them, work them and then care for them in retirement. There are some wonderful dogs that do the rounds at the schools here that always amaze and educate those that are ignorant. That said, some of the dogs don’t retire well and it can be a lottery, because its so hard to control the external triggers that can cause a dog to respond in an inappropriate manner for the situation. On one side of my family they are all coppers in the UK, most starting in mounted or dog divisions. Sadly, attempts to rehome the Shepherds over the years hasn’t worked out all that well, several have made fatal mistakes after retirement.

Anthropomorphism at its worst.

They are tools trained for one job. Humane destruction is the only way.

That’s a bit harsh mate, there are some fantastic ex-service dogs in the community. A lot of spaniels, beagles, labradors, they’re not all Shepherds. I can think of one specific ex-NZ Army Explosive Detection Dog in particular that has turned many peoples’ perception of its breed upside down. Its a pitbull.

As you wish. Of course possession of a pitbull would be illegal in the UK

A dog is not a tool, that's why you cannot buy one in a tool shop.
As a matter of interest are you a Tool? because surely you were trained to do a job, maybe you should be put down at 65!

Sorry for the rant, but having kept and trained dogs for all sorts of work, I feel very strongly about this, unlike humans dogs are easy to rehabilitate. regardless of what work they have done.

You make my point about anthropomorphism so much better than I!

A dog is an animal, in this case one that has been trained for a purpose. Once it can no longer fulfill that purpose, and cannot satisfactorily fulfill another it should be humanely destroyed.

A dog is not a human.

At no point did I say a dog is human, far from it, I pointed out the fact that it isn't a tool. Just because it stops working doing the job a human trained it for does not mean it should be put down, it can go on being a loyal companion.

yeah gerarddwatts you must have trained for a job in your life I hope when you are past your sell by date someone comes and puts you down dumbass

I do soooo like this,............A dog is not a tool, that's why you cannot buy one in a tool shop.
