Scam

Wifey does accounts for her son’s business.
Monday she received email from a supplier saying they had changed their banking details and showing the new info.
Later Monday she received an email from her son asking her to make a BACS payment to same company.
She was suspicious of the wording in this email (Not like how son writes) so called him, the mail hadn’t come from him.
She called the intended recipient company and the confirmed no change of bank details.
Someone had managed to hack into Wifey’s email account and get enough info. to try the scam.
This is the second time in twelve months this has happened.
The first time, the scammers worked the opposite way round and contacted some customers we do work for and pretended to be us, the scammers told the companies we had changed banks and supplied the new details, and then they asked the companies if they could make early payments as we had a cash flow problem.
3 companies payed money thinking it was going to us, but it wasn’t.
This quite a few thousand pounds.
Then, the arguments started as to whose fault it was….That was messy.
Beware!
Cheers, Ken.

New supplier, existing supplier changes bank accounts, colleague emailing you to approve urgent payment. A 5 min telephone call to verify saves hours if not days or weeks of pain. These scammers are getting more and more sophisticated, stay alert and be proactive in protecting yourselves guys n gals.

That's been around for years. To avoid scams like this every payment needs authorising or confirming by the person that ordered the goods or service and documenting. Most businesses have to generate around 10 times the revenue to recover lost cash.

I have just been notified that I have had a windfall, as I am quite well situated I think I will donate it to another gullable SD member.

Generative AI is already here. That means your voice and the voice of those you trust can be digitally altered to say anything eg payment request.
The usual flags of urgency, desperation, act now and what does your gut tell you.
Ever more sophisticated…..

Indeed, trust your instincts.
