Hi all

I hope everyone is doing well and bearing up after the election results.

My questions to you all are:

The scopes mentioned in the thread title:

Which one of these would you recommend?
Which is better value?
Or
Would you recommend something entirely different?

It’s going on a .300 weatherby magnum which currently has a Zeiss daivari 1.5-6x42

Thanks in advance!!

I would go S&B. I love zeiss and have a V8 and HT but believe the entry level v4 is lacking in terms of glass, which I get given its price point.

As above my understanding is that that model of Zeiss is an entry level built to a cost. It’s likely a good scope that being said.

The Schmidt is a run of the mill Schmidt but built to usual exacting standards, build like a Sherman tank. It’s the one I’d go for given a straight choice.

The Schmitt and bender seems the better option, I always like to get other peoples opinions on these things,

Thanks

100% The Schmidt. I’ve had both (V4 was a different spec) and though both are good, the Schmidt is better at last light than the V4.

The V4’s were about half the current price when first brought out, and seemed good value at that. I’m not convinced they’re a £1k+ scope though. Unlike the Schmidt which is fully European, the V4 is made in Japan. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good scope, but it isn’t the same as a German Zeiss (I’ve got 2x V6s now, and they’re much better).

If you want a Zeiss, I’d recommend looking for a good, used V6.

Not sure why the comparison - the Zeiss is a much cheaper lowered tiered scope. It’s good but it’s no “alpha”, unlike the S&B. Given the slightest choice I would unquestionably take the S&B - not quite the same but I absolutely love my Summit and definitely a better all round package than a mate’s V4. Disclaimer - I’m not a “dialler”…

Have had both - the S&B was superior, so much so that the V4 was swapped for a V6 which is a completely different animal and (to my eyes) is better than the S&B.

Six of one and two threes really. Very much depends on your eyes.

Also consider:

Type of turrets
Size of eye piece and clearance to bolt handle
Eye relief - 300 Win Mag has plenty of recoil so you want plenty of eye relief especially when shooting prone.
Reticle - again what do you like?

I would suggest the current Zeiss Diavari with 42mm objective will sit nice and low, giving you a decent cheek weld etc and probably will do 95% of the hunting chores the rifle will be used for.

If it was me, spend the money on hunting rather than another scope.

Thanks for all of your opinions/advice,it’s all been helpful, it’s the Schmitt and bender that I’ll go for,

Thanks again and happy hunting

Just replaced an s&b klassic with a v4 3x12x56. For me the positives are for me, an illuminated reticle and the zeiss is better in low light conditions. Suppose it is a personal choice
