Scope mounting problem.

I'd just go but a new half round file and using a vice file it. Blacking the action to check for high spots.
That is if I didn't have access to a mill, which I do. In which case I'd probably find center and then run an end mill down the centre. Then it can't rock on the fixings.

On the subject of bedding bases, it can be done easily to a high standard using Devcon 10112. I’ve done several R700 rails and providing the clean up is thorough you can achieve a very fine result. Once done loctite blue for the screws (not the most forward screw though if it’s tapped over the barrel threads!).

I would wax the receiver and screw holes with neutral shoe polish, apply the Devcon to the underside of the bases then screw down lightly (coat the screws in wax also). Then clean up with WD40 and ear buds.

You need to spread the load out or you will inevitably shear the screws holding the base to the action. When you bed the base don’t fully tighten the screws, just nip them up finger tight so that you create a decent bed of compound. When it’s dry and hardened then screw the base down tight.

I would reorder the same mounts probably or at least go to my nearest rifle dealers and se if they have similar second hand that fit to check that gap issue. it can simply be a single set of shitey mounts.Thats if you are 100% they are the right mounts.I have to confess when zeroing the BSA Monarch i had a great grouping ON THE BIPOD then it went to sheit when i sat in the high chair and popped a target just 50 yards out. i discovered it was my own poor shooting style from this damned seat leaning too far forward because the bars too far away , and not having a proper cheek weld .Ruined the groups completely by 3 or 4 inches

That's interesting. It was completely the opposite with my unmoderated .270. Absolutely appalling when I tried using a bipod, but OK off a backpack, sticks, highseat rail etc. I think the bipod was putting too much flex on the fore end.

Anyway, perhaps I'll just jam a couple of bits of twig under each side of these mounts and carry on.....

make sure all screws are tight around the rifle, then test it again, then go hunting.

All screws now checked. All tight.
I can't see anything anywhere that looks like it has moved or could move.
Just that damned gap eating away at my mind. Wish I'd never spotted it!

(I suppose I might've put the base over a rusty patch that's stopped it seating down properly ).

I'll certainly contact Norman Clark if I haven't got it sorted before I'm next passing that way.

I would just give him a call because if you think you have problems now because the mount is not fully seated just wait until you shear of the screws and have to drill them out.
It will cost you next to nothing to phone him and I'm sure that he will advise you well if you explain the situation. But do mention that it is an ex military receiver that your rifle is built on and not a later commercial action.

The profile is the same, but it will be the length is the rear base is the difference, and hole spacing, but PH will have drilled it based on commercial standards. It’s most likely polishing from removal of the strip clip hump that’s put it out of factory spec, and this will be the same issue cropping up with other Mauser rear bases.
That’s my best guess anyway. The small gap would not bother me as there’s about the same bearing surface still, as there would be with a weaver top mount base. I honestly don’t believe it will shear off either.

I’d test it tomorrow for a few shots, give it a few knocks on the ground and wiggle it well, then shoot it again, and if holding zero, go hunting.

I wonder, was there a gap with the old bases? Or were they narrower so the issue would t have materialised ?

Just do it. I'd of probably done by now.

All it needs is two points of contact and the fixings as opposed to the fixings only and potentially rocking on them.
Use the scope to check alignment. It needs to drop in easily and be looking at a distant target pretty well now it's zeroed. Easy.

I don't think it likely to shear off. Just worried it could wobble.
There may well have been a gap with the old P-H bases. I never looked. And unless you were looking you'd never see this gap either.

If you put the old bases behind the new one, you’ll visually be able to see if there’s a profile difference between the two. If there isn’t, assume the old one was similar, and if that worked fine, this will too. But ocular lens housing might not allow you to put it behind to check of course

That's just a pic taken with my phone, but I do now have a new camera! Yet to try it out. Was planning on doing that this afternoon after finishing making burgers, but been fiddling about with rifle instead. Blimey, it's a hard life!
