Scope ring marks

Was at the range the other day and the chap in the lane next to me had his S&B PM2 in Spuhr mounts but had a layer (or 2) of insulation tape wound round the part of the scope tube seated in the rings to prevent rings marks.
Wondered if anyone else uses anything similar? Would be interested to know.

Unless using really cheap (and I mean really really cheap) and badly made rings or scope yu shouldn't need anything. The mounts and scope that guy had are machined about as perfect as possible so as long as not too much pressure is used they will be fine. If you need tape you're either a ham fisted oaf or have some of the worst made products ever.

Lap the rings with a lapping bar so they are truly straight. Whilst modern machining may be accurate, plenty of room for error from base fixings through to rings.

There seems to be an assumption nowadays that everything should fit perfectly with no hand fitting required. And sadly those that have those skills are getting fewer and fewer.

Talley rings say lapping voids the warranty.

I wish more scope mounts used the rubber rings like the Sako/Tikka Optilock do.

Slightly off topic but Burris Signature (Zee) rings do this, with an added bonus that you can use offset inserts to tweek alignment to keep scope adjustment in the centre of its travel to account for any slight misalignment in rail mounting (or gain extra scope adjustment for long range play if that's what floats your boat). Have a set on my .243 (all be it with neutral inserts) and they do the job fine whilst not looking too "tactical".

I have used the Burris Signature Zee rings for years on all my rifles, never had a mark on any of my scopes, also cheaper than Optilocks.
