Zeiss Duralyt 3-12 x50 would be in your budget and will serve you well.

Or consider a used better quality scope, most will have been looked after and you get more bang for your Buck

GPO great scopes and you can get them used for £400
6x42 or bigger single magnification from the Likes of S&Bender etc . You have around 4" target on a broadside shot size of a Roe for a perfect shot .
I have been using one for over 25 years on one of my rifles and my daughter also has one on hers . Though i do have some higher mag scopes 10x is really as high a mag i shoot any deer at and frequency i have done that is way under 1% of shots - On The hill , open fields and the woodlands.
Higher magnification with fine cross hairs are really better if you shoot for precision on paper and so called " Varmints" what we in the UK call pests . Most of them guys don't take shots 300 and over though because you have to get wind and trajectory just about perfect.
8x mag might be better for old eyes if the use is more Moreland or hills

I personally believe that a Schmidt & Bender Klassic 8x56 is the best choice.
I have mixed mag scopes on other rifles, But I have found I very rarely change power from 8x.
Obviously what ground you stalk on will make a big difference but for most stalking situations I think a Klassic is more than enough.
Far Superior glass and much better light transmission.

I have a delta 5-30x50 on mine. Was c£800 new but you can pick them up sh for much less
An 8x56 is a great scope, but gives zero flexibility for close shooting in the woods, or longer shots if required. A good 2-12, or 3-12, or similar covers most bases.
I happen to have a spare S&B Hungaria 8x56 having bought 2 as a job lot
they are as far as i can tell identical and in good well-used nick but I'll only need one
would be willing to pass it on for what it cost me (~180inc post i think but i do need to confirm)

Really nice scope that having a Google of everything everyone recommending and offering and there all solid scopes spoiled for choice here great community
