Scopes for Novices

I've been helping a friend get into stalking over the past couple of years and initially set up a rifle (Steyr Scout) for him, complete with a nice 4-16x44 FFP scope. He was by no means new to shooting, and could manage the combination on targets... but when stalking he was too overloaded with other inputs to make use of any of the refinements. So I switched him to a simpler rifle and a Zeiss 6x42 so he could focus on the essentials, and it's absolutely what I should have done from the start.
