Scotland deer stalking - Fit and competent?

I don’t know whether it was already common knowledge, but I’ve just seen that NatureScot require deer stalkers to be registered’fit and competent’ to be able to control deer if you:

• shoot during the close season
• shoot at night (from one hour after sunset until one hour before sunrise)
• drive deer with vehicles….

The only thing that has changed recently is it's moved to online only. I did mine online last time and it was very straightforward

Useless Naturescot . They should just go the full way and open up deer like foxes rabbits etc. Why should a government department need your details unless you are directly shooting for them.

Last time I checked, culling of foxes and rabbits were not licensed (traps/snaring aside).

Be careful what you wish for, as the long dog will soon be there to 'help out' with your deer cull...

You are correct foxes and Rabbits are not licenced and now Naturescot have opened up on males what is the point of the Fit and competent register. Most of the scottish lev 2 were done in the pub by a friend. If the long dog men take there share who cares we have devalued Scotland iconic deer to the point of vermin all because Nature.scot dont have the time to do proper check,s. All this culling has resulted in a major increase in red deer in the central belt and an explosion in the number of roe deer.

Just get the landowner or whoever gives the permission to shoot to pay you £1 per annum, then as an employee you don’t need to register. That’s the way we do it.

I don't mean to be pedantic old chap but, strictly speaking, it is the lack of culling that has resulted in the increasing deer population in across the Central Belt and Lowlands.

A direct result of a patchwork of small, individual "permissions" overseen by a stalker who has his / her own ideas and objectives for any cull (many of them guided by notions of "preserving" their sport for subsequent seasons, or "managing" the population with a view towards better antler...)

No Husky sadly i did the useless bit of paper with a chap who was made up to AW because he new Nial Rowantree. Its just an opinion i might be wrong about the pub tickets but i feel it was done more regular than the three stalk,s back in the day. The lev 2 was just a money making scam that benifitted the few and was encouraged forward by the then SNH team and FC as a way in to leases. Where are the leases now (conned)

You might be correct but the facts remain the government want numbers reduced and they have tried every trick in the book etching on the side of legality normalising bad practice. The have thrown £100,s of Millions at the problem with out success. A blind dog can see that the top table that get paid copious amounts of money have been getting it wrong for over 15 years.

I am sure they would and i am sure Naturescot have been looking at ways to legalise the travelers i know they do well down south.

Did your AW tell you that is how they became an AW ?
