Scottish Male deer now legal out of season

There are four threads about this.

It's a step in the right direction. I hooe the English consultation delivers even further lifting of the restrictions brought about by the deer act.

Am sure individual land owners in Scotland will use their discretion and what best for them at the time but must help in some situations, be practical to have the 222 for roe and maybe some other female larger species in England.🤷🏽‍♂️

Pointless legislation which has naff all to do with reducing deer numbers.
If they were serious about it they would have extended the season for Hinds, or even got rid of the closed season.
Sure, it may reduce deer numbers, but not because of more being shot.
The good Stags that have held larger numbers of Hinds expend more of their energy and lose more condition before and during the rut than the crappy little ones that only hold a handful.
No close season may mean that they will be moved around more and not have chance to regain condition before the Winter weather hits, net result may be that the good Stags, that many estates leave so that their genetics lead to a healthier population, may be more susceptible to dying off during the Winter.
The following year the crappier Stags hold more Hinds so the health of the population deteriorates over time.

Does that mean thermal sights are now legal for every-day use (Not night) for non license holders just like England, or am I reading that a bit weirdly?

I note that the Rural Affairs Committee and most who responded to the consultation all had serious misgivings with the proposals.

Yet Scottish Government “ignored the advice”.

I also parked in a Forestry and Land Carpark in Argyl.

Notice on the car park meter said

“These woods are owned by the Scottish Ministers and managed on their behalf by Forestry and Land Scotland”.

Kind of stuck in my throat - rather feels as if its the good old days of private lands for government ministers and you only allowed by their kind invitation and you should feel jolly lucky and don’t ask any awkward questions such as where is the money going?

A bit like national parks in former colonies being private poaching reserves for ministers cronies.

The only ones who will benefit will be those with FLS contracts who can continue to hammer deer all round at £150 or whatever they get a head. This will create a massive vacuum into which all the surrounding will flood - helped in a huge by the very poor state of fences around large stands of increasingly mature coniferous timber.

Of course this will end up in a major reduction in deer numbers as once the majority of the male deer are killed, then there will no sex for the females. And unfortunately for deer there is no ability for same sex couples to get pregnant. I suspect many in parliament think they can cos that’s what all their woke friends are doing.

Fast forward 50 years time. There will be huge fanfare as the iconic deer are reintroduced to Scotland!

if shooting stags in the winter is going to cause them to suffer because they get no chance to rest, would people avoid shooting hinds that are near a stag?

In many, many places, after the rut has finished the stags drift off to other places, whilst many hinds remain hefted to the same area, so it's in no way similar to actively going out deliberately to find stags.

From 21st October 2023 the Deer (Close Season) (Scotland) Amendment Order 2023 removes the statutory closed season for all males, meaning that male deer, of all species, (Red Stag, Roebuck, Sika Stag and Fallow Buck), maybe shot all year-round.

From 01st November 2023 those that possess a night licence, and are specifically authorised to do so, may use thermal imaging equipment and night vision scopes for the taking of deer at night.

From 01st November 2023 the requirement of a minimum bullet weight to shoot the large species of deer (Red, Sika & Fallow) will be reduced from 100grains to 80grains.

A night licence still has to be applied for and justified for specific situation and will only be issued to those on the NatureScot Fit and Competent register. To meet the condition of a night licence you generally have to be accompanied and have access to a dog. This is not a free for all
