Seal Hunting

More dead seals in the Baltic lately. Starvation i.e. not enough of prey i.e. herring. Probably seal population will take care of itself i.e. adjust to circumstances, Darwin in a form.

Friend of mine has returned to live in Scotland after years in Pond Inlet where he would regularly go out on the ice with his Inuit in-laws shooting seals and narwhals. Will get some details.

Seals can be dangerous fookers when you’re fishing off the rocks.
They grab your catch and rip it off the hook. Every now and again they misjudge the snatch and you end up with one on the end of your line, I’ve seen a few rods broken and some more gone into the sea plus a few close calls with anglers almost tipping head first over and 60’ down.
The locals were using 70Lb line to reduce loses. I’m not that brave, that stupid, or that strong.
It did get exciting reeling in a string of mackerel so fast that they skipped across the water with a couple of big greys in hot pursuit, those suckers can swim really fast when they want to.
If you want to try it yourself, go mackerel bashing off The Bridges of Ross in Clare, or The High Rock in Howth, but don’t say you weren’t warned.

they have also been known to kill dogs especially in the wildfowling season i hare it when one of my chessies decides she want to go and play with them in the tweed lol

Double bugger then.
Reminds me of when I took Mrs Ade8mm on an offroad driving day with my "go anywhere" tricked-out LR Ninety, winch, diff-guards, , jackable sills, 32"mud-plugger tyres snorkel er.al
Mother's day with the lad who was about three at the time.
We spent a stressfull hour or so with stuck in a rather deep mud/hole/pond with water in the cab up to our knees. Only to suffer the the ignominy of being pull- out by a Suzuki.
She still delights in reminding me.
I now use a Suzuki Jimny ! -long story
Sorry to Hi-jack my own thread!
Oh yes that reminds me I had a "Hi-Lift" jack as well. Still have that . Great for pulling fence posts
Happy days. (Wish I still
had that truck, truth be known)
Maybe we should start an SD confessional thread if members aren't too precious?
😎
Well done you - many non-believers have made the road to Nowhere Damascus conversion to the sainted Jimny!
Bless.

Here’s what he’s saying:
‘Seals: .17HMR seems to be popular these days for open water hunting. .223 but don't think there's as much of those around anymore. 22-250 As well but can make a bit of a mess. 22mag too especially if you use a scope though most didn't was useful for just getting the seal to go under as soon as it surfaced then get in on it closer for the kill.
Narwhal: most use .338mags, 300win mags and 375mag, 7mm but varies again with the ammo, quite a range in cost and I assume quality of round.’

Had Swedish clients over recently and one of them shoots 400 seals a year, stupid thing is they can’t sell any by products from the seals ie rendered down blubber for treating boots etc.
He also has to dive down to get the seals after they are shot as they sink, his boat is like an aluminium landing craft with a front ramp to get them into the boat easil.

There nasty bitey things ,had a pup wash up on the beach on night up Arbroath way in scabby windy conditions, ment went to lift it move it up the rocks thinking it would be safer, ended up getting bit ,a tetanus jag in his butt and half a dozen stitches.
Guys that had the salmon farm at usan used to get a permit to cull so many a year 5 I think it was,but used to see seals all the time around the nets .Guys working the nets used to take a shotgun out with them.
