Second hand made knife (and 3rd I suppose)...

random question; are you taking any more material out of the tang before heat treating?
All the stuff I see on youtube etc has loads of holes drilled out for what I am assuming is weight, could be epoxy bonding as well.

Good question mate. The main knife is heavy...which I like as it feels more well built and sturdy in the hand. I have drilled out tangs and it does save a surprising amount of weight (just do it PRE-HEAT TREATING if you value your drill bits and drill press!).

In my opinion most do it more to secure a stronger epoxy bond, which I'm sure it does. However epoxy can be very strong stuff if done right and in conjunction with pins/loveless/corby bolts should never budge. Only time I'd do it to any great degree was if I made a very thick bladed knife (5mm+) or a very large one. That could make a big difference but personally i have no plans to do so.

For your average 'stalking' knife my opinion is that keying all surfaces, cleaning all thoroughly and using good epoxy mixed well is more than adequate. Atb, p
