semi auto 22lr advise

Bought a Ruger 10/22 a few years back after swapping in a Marlin. not one of my better decisions. My expectations in accuracy were obviously too optimistic as it never was able to match its predecessor even with a trigger kit and some fettling. Reliability wasn't too bad with Winchester subsonics after modifying the back of the bolt. Now use an Anschutz with a thumbhole stock - couldn't be happier. I have been toying with the idea of another semi-auto in 22 - a Browning buckmaster - but have been advised to not too. From my experience I would stick to the bolt action for bunny control but the Ruger was good fun but notably less accurate.

My 1950's Brno semi-auto has never let me down.

The trigger does not snap like the breaking stem of a crystal wineglass but I am used to it after 30+ years.

With a PH mod on the front it does what I need it to do on rabbits (I never shoot a rabbit so close that its companions can hear the action cycling) and with the mod off, it does what I need it to do on the range.

CCI subs, by the way.

Just bought myself a CZ 511 for the princely sum of £45!
Not tried it yet but having had one previously I do rate them but as has been said for accuracy and quietness in use you will ot beat a bolt action

I have a Brno 581 (511 CZ) and love it. Can't find any extra mags for it tho.
The Ruger is actually a fine rifle but you need to learn to use it: The carbines are not generally accurate. The magazines should be cleaned regularly -especially with subs or low pressure cartridges. The triggers suck.... In other words, unless you buy one of the old "Deluxe" models without the barrel band and in a walnut stock, you must do some work to get optimal performance. I joke about Rugers: Once you get a good rifle the only thing "Ruger" left to it is the receiver! They are money pits.

In the end, a good bolt gun rules the roost around my house.~Muir

I found one Muir thanks to the generosity of an SD member but they are like rocking horse pooh.

Just refinishing the stock on mine....................very very slowly

I hear you on the mags.
I had a problem with mine: it would go full auto when I pulled the trigger. I got a hold of CZ USA to see if they had any 511 sear parts and they said they would look. Six months later I get an email from a CZ saying they'd stumbled upon the last of the 511 trigger parts and they mailed all of them to me free of charge. I would truly like to get a few more mags but I didn't have any luck the last time I searched.~Muir

PS: Have it's big brother, the CZ/Brno 611 in 22WMR and I was smarter (and richer) then and bought three 6 round mags and three 10 round mags when I had the chance.

I had a Savage Model 7 with its original Weaver 'scope about three decades ago, it was very good for that, wish I had never sold it. I believe it was one of those set up as sniper rifles in 1940 as it had a "T" stamp on it although no Enfield acceptance marks.

I have an Anshutz 525. Really accurate and a great rabbit rifle. It loves Winchester subs!

It's a solid bit of kit and I've never had an issue with it.

The only downside is the noise but its not that bad.

"dead is deaf"!

Thanks for the replies lads but i think im going to stick to my 22lr B/A after reading that lot

Take a look at a Voere - they are a semi-auto but you can lock the bolt forward so you don't get the bolt noise. I think it's the best of both worlds and is much more accurate then my heavy-barreled 10/22.

You can do similar with the old CZ511 by using the knob at the rear of the action I've been told effectively making it a straight pull rifle

tbh:

i would not have an auto in the cabinet ever again,

I had 2 10/22's waste of time and money.

also had a voere but sold it on soon after, i have used a anny 22 lr semi and it was also pants,

i stuck with a 22 lr bolt action, more accurate and more economical and less noise as well as..............not a single problem with cycling the ammo as its not a auto :)

bob.

Yes, bla bla bla but a semi- auto is FUN!

Betcha I can make the tin can/golf ball/shotgun cartridge case/fag packet jump quicker than you can.
