Sheep Attack

Over the years I had dealings with several sheep worrying situations, some of them appalling. The dogs involved have varied, Labs, terriers, and lurchers. a red setter and an Alsatian. One of the worst was a pair of collies that had worked sheep all their lives, the farmer retired and the dogs were treated as house pets. They went on a real rampage and caused a great deal of damage until they were dealt with.

Personally, I think the time has come when dogs, unless being worked or trained should be kept on leads, ask Dartmoor sheep farmers what they think!

Farmers in our area have a zero tolerance to stray dogs in with livestock. I grew up working on a number of local farms- dogs chasing livestock were shot immediately.

In relation to my own dogs- I trust them 100% when I am with them- would I trust my GWP out of my sight - No, her prey drive is to high and the excitement levels get to much for her.

I think the time has come for dog owners to be legally required to demonstrate that their animals are100% obedient, and safe., or risk having them put down.........

I think the obsession with XL bullies and similar types over the recent years has caused the issues with humans being attacked more- going back almost 30
Yrs ago I was a local authority dog warden- we had packs of dogs running the streets then causing mayhem, attacking other dogs and biting people, but most were terrier x breeds so not likely to kill anyone.

We were euthanising over 300 dogs a year then as there were not the rescues as today .

Staffys were popular then. But they are not bad with people so much , especially then.

It’s a weekly occurrence up here as well. Was out stalking and just happened to pass by the farm on my way home to see the a big out bull type dog running round the lambing field. Must have been 10 dead lambs with more injured. Farmer was doing everything he could and I said I would happily shot it when all of a sudden up wanders a full family blissfully unaware of what their dog was up to. No apology or anything and then they started shouting at me for threatening to shoot a loved well trained pet.

I think we should start with people driving to demonstrate they are 100% then move on to other things Bikes would be a good one.

A friends GWPs got out and caused utter devastation not dissimilar to the thread here.

He is a stalker /of a farming nature and knew exactly the damage it had done.

One of those people you wouldn’t have expected it to happen to.
