Shooting Cattle

Thanks for all your answers - - I've used the .243 and shotgun on the aforementioned spot without any problems before. I'm tempted to think that using a 12 bore with SSGs is probably the most effective at close range and the rifle if you're farther away ?

.22rf is sufficient but unless you have the balls you may feel more comfortable using something a little more substantial on the largest of bulls or boars or if adrenaline is playing a part which makes a big difference. As for positioning, the general rule of thumb is to shoot through front or top of head aiming down the spinal column(this generally helps to elliminate exiting) when the animal is in the "stood at ease" position which obviously alters per species....

I always use a .410 shotgun with a 3" magnum cartridge for cattle. Range about four inches. It's perfect.

Same gun with 2.5" cartridge for pigs and adult sheep, or 2" cartridge for lambs.

cheers mereside got there in the end
picture now deleted before it causes any more upset

Do you need any particular licence to put livestock down ? Never had to but would given the chance.

If you did would you need anything specifyed on your FAC, im guessing not if you can do it with a shotgun also.

What happens to the beast afterwards ? how are they disposed of and whos responsibility ?

Yes. You need to be authorised by the owner... or be the owner.

Never had to but would given the chance.

 Keen! ... But in a good way?

If you did would you need anything specifyed on your FAC,

Yes again... You need to have your firearms and ammunition suitably conditioned.

You guessed wrongly... but you're right about the shotgun... funny old world, init?

They then get colected,at the owners expense,by a hunt kennel(for feeding to the hounds)a knackerman for disposal by rendering or incineration.....thats after having a brain stem sample taken for BSE testing.................

Ha,ha thanks mate for the reply.

What i meant by the last question was, once the beast has been put down, is it down to the farmer / horse owner etc to dispose of the carcass, or have it taken away somewhere, Or could they do what they wanted with it ie feed the dogs etc, or would that be frowned upon.

DEFRA would certainly "frown upon" that!!! Animal by-products regs.....etc

The odd thing is, Airborne.

The roolz say...animals normally reared as food in the UK, i.e. "farm" animals (even if you keep them as "pets) need to be carted off to be incinerated or fed to the hounds. "Don't want the water table getting contaminated", "health risks to man and beast" ... etc, etc, blah di blah.

Animals normally not reared as food, like say horses, any number of horses, dogs, cats, budgies... etc, etc, and you can stick 'em in a hole. Evidently they, and all of the human population that wind up in similar holes, won't be any problem at all to the water table or the health of others. Very odd.

But there you go, that's "roolz" for you.
