Shooting Cattle

quite a few of the cattle i have destroyed have gone into the food chain
they are shot with the vet present who deems them fit to slaughter
once shot they are immediatley bled and a long plastic plug put into entry wound in head to stop spinal fluid leaking from animal
all the relevant passports and documentation must be in place and relevant to the animals ear tag
it then must arrive at an abbotoir within 40 mins
regards andy

Pardon? When was this?

The pithing rod (that you describe put into the hole in the head) has been banned since July 2001.

To the best of my knowledge the time to get to a slaughterhouse has always been 2 hours.

this wasnt a pithing cane it was around a foot long with plastic barbs on the end and a plastic cap with a foam washer on it
it was blue in colour and it was inserted and left in the animal during loading and transport to the abbotior
i cant remember who provided these it was either the vet present or the knackerman who organised the job
the abbotior sent there own transport and it was the vet that specified 40 mins to 1 hour

I have humane dispatch on my ticket - to use .22lr. Aim straight down between the eyes/ears as previously described and on down to the spinal cord.

That was called a "one use" pithing rod......to prevent cross contamination after BSE.........

You still can't use the disposable ones if it is going into the food chain. The theory being that in destroying neurological tissue you could get seeding of brain tissue via the blood stream and still beating heart.

So how do they kill them in abattoirs now then, just stun and bleed??

yes all you do now is stun and bleed
and wait for it to stop kicking before you can get to work on it
