Shortest Silencer

I’m in the market for a new silencer. I’ve got a lovely Oceania Defence that I use on several rifles. The only issue is the length. 155mm in front of the muzzle is too much. especially on a 16” barrel.

I’m looking for something short and fat. So there is still the volume to capture the gasses. I’m probably asking too much but why not.

Calibre wise it’s the usual 6.5 creedmoor and .308 so 46gr of powder being burnt.

And before anyone comments on my choice of description Hiram Maxim invented the rifle silencer not the sound moderator 🤣

Some Sunday discussion….

So far the simple but effective Ase Utra SL5i is the front runner.

I've got the shortest F&D mod on my .308

Punches well above it's weight (which is next to nothing) both in terms of sound suppression and muzzle flip. I really rate it.

Is it this model? I would be grateful if there was ever the opportunity to see it in action. Welcome to come up to Derbyshire and shoot on my ground.

The telescoping model 231; any idea what the maximum barrel diameter is? I’ve got some Bartlein carbon barrels that are rather fat.

I’ve 2 F&D on a couple of rifles. They’ve been decent. I’m sure there was a couple of reports of them having issues somewhere but don’t quote me on that.

I suspect the lighter you go, the shorter lived and more disposable these moderators become.

Still have an old ASE northstar which is a bit of a unit but going well. Did they stop making the Jet Z? That was my understanding

A DPT over barrel will have same overhang as an SL5i, be better balanced and have better attenuation. That said, I still use an SL5i on my 270. As above, they're bombproof.

Hi scotch

I’ve had the same problem - having 2 rifles with bartlein carbon barrels.
The Freyr over barrel mod won’t fit and neither will the DPT. I think they both have ~23mm - I need 25mm.
I use a Barton gun works on my 7-08 and a hardy on my 7 SAUM.
Was looking at a front mounted f and d ultimate silence the other day but guess that won’t add any benefit to what you already have?

I have seen the spreadsheet. I have to say it is rather out of date now unfortunately, having been published in 2018 (that’s a guess with the date on the article stating 2108)
Not much new that has reduced the dimensions of he more popular brands
Some really nice slimmer version from CQS and the Stalon Victor

Forward protrusion stays roughly constant at between 11-14cm

Due a new review to cover the current available models

I've got the Ultimate Silence 3D - 131 on my 308. It's the smallest model but its very effective. I've also got an S&L mod (Ultradome) on my 243 - which is great. But the F&D is a noticable step up in terms of performance.

I've also tried a bigger version of the F&D on my 308 - although I can't now remember if it was the 231 or 281. The performance of the larger mod was very impressive but I'm very happy with the 131 and like its small size. Horses for courses.

I believe there were issues with some of F&D's earlier mods. But I have only heard good things about the latest models. And I'd have no hesitation recommending them based on my experience.

Hausken do a very short reflex style mod, I think it’s called the 151…
Anyway, I’ve got one, very small extension of the rifle and moderation is good.
If I had the time again I’d have got the same mod, but the ‘extreme’ version which has mesh in the baffles, allegedly reducing sound further.

Running a F&D FW149 (left) on my .243 and .270, and a F&D UTS231 on my 2 .308s - you could say I’m a bit of a F&D convert! The FW149 is a barrel mount so protrudes forward 4” but you don’t notice it’s there - it’s lovely on my 20” Sako 75. The UTS231 is more workmanlike but is noticeably different. I see the 149 as a “lifed” item so use it sparingly only for stalking - the all titanium 231 is more functional than aesthetic. Interestingly, I’ve just bought a OD Hunter Alpine and have high hopes - hope your experience isn’t common. Sadly, I had early gas cutting on my FW196 (middle mod) on the .308 despite ensuring that my loads fully burnt in the barrel. Only Ti going forwards is my maxim. Wildcat Evo (right) for comparison.

Another one for ASA - I bought one off Callum Ferguson of Precision Rifle Services to go on a 6.5x55 of his with a long barrell, it's all good a few hundred rounds and one full season now in

I think he said it is all he stocks now as he is so keen on them
